'The Unliving' Playable Demo Available, Early Access Delayed Until 2022 - Trailer

by Rainier on Oct. 26, 2021 @ 11:14 a.m. PDT

The Unliving is dark fantasy action role-playing game that combines roguelite and real-time strategy gameplay for a new spin on the RPG genre.

The realm of the living has been corrupted to its core and a storm is coming to change the world order. This storm is you, a mighty Necromancer, a sorcerer who denies death and leads the legions of the dead. Clerics and lords hope to hide behind high walls, but there’s no stronghold to cover them from your wrath. Smite hundreds of those standing in your way and turn them into your tools on the way to a greater purpose.

The Unliving is a dynamic rogue-lite action RPG with strategic elements. Raise the undead, use numerous spells and explore a mystical world, all realised with darkly extravagant pixel-art.

In The Unliving, players wield the dark art of necromancy to command a growing army of the undead through a mystical world, wreaking havoc across humanity’s domains and turning fallen enemies into morbid servants. While the Necromancer may control the undead even he cannot escape death; with each reincarnation, players must learn from their mistakes, forge new strategies, and overcome the living, all while trying to unravel the secrets buried deep in forgotten corners of the world of The Unliving.

Originally planned to launch into Steam Early Access today, Team17 and RocketBrush Studio have announced today that it is being delayed until 2022.

Instead a The Unliving demo is now live on Steam, and will grant players a sneak peek at one of the levels, a boss challenge involving escorting an engorged undead ally towards an objective, and 40 abilities and undead upgrades to try out including blood wave, which hurls a wave of bones at enemies, damaging them while also pushing them back, and blood tide, which turns spilled blood into chimeras that crawl to enemy forces and explode.

Key Features:

  • Turn enemies into obedient undead minions: Reincarnate fallen foes into loyal soldiers that obey every command
  • Sacrifice the undead: The Necromancer can sacrifice members of his undead legions to release powerful spells that can change the course of the battle
  • Enjoy hand-drawn levels: The world of The Unliving is procedurally generated from a selection of meticulously crafted and highly detailed pixel art
  • Death is only the beginning: Through each permadeath players will be resurrected, keeping their progression and unlocks, each attempt better equipping the Necromancer to take on the challenges that lurk in the shadows
  • Overcome gruelling bosses: Powerful creatures prowl the wilderness, waiting for their chance to take down the Necromancer, each boasts its own fighting style and abilities, requiring strategic gameplay to overcome
  • Unlock the secrets of necromancy: Cryptic notes, coerced information, and ancient artifacts will be instrumental in piecing together the truth behind the necromancer’s immortality, and the unnatural abilities he wields

The Unliving is currently in development for PC (Steam).
