'Plunder Panic' Steam Early Access update Adds New Game Modes, Modify-Arrs, More Stages Coming Soon

by Rainier on Nov. 2, 2021 @ 11:49 a.m. PDT

Plunder Panic is a swashbuckling, up to 12-player action-arcade game where two rival crews battle for supremacy on the high seas!

Get ready to flip those eye-patches and head into battle with up to 12 players (locally or online) in this retro-styled arcade beat-em-up that pits pixelated pirates vs. pirates in quick, round-based matches. With enough weapons, items, modes, and “modify-arrs” to fill the biggest deep-sea treasure chest, Plunder Panic is the perfect game to cement friendships and foster rivalries!

Featuring both local and online play, work with your crew to plunder booty, defeat the enemy captain, or scuttle their ship. The first team to capture an objective wins, so be on the lookout for other sneaky pirates!

Raise the Jolly Roger and dive into this blend of classic and modern games, where retro graphics and simple controls meet fast-paced, frantic arcade action. With multiple play modes, unique power-ups and game changing modify-arrs, there are hundreds of gameplay combinations guaranteed to shiver ye timbers! Plunder Panic features flexible team configurations, including local, online, and AI-controlled players. Time to assemble your crew, get all hands on deck and send your scurvy competition to Davey Jones’ Locker!

The hardworking deckhands at Will Winn Games have been working around the clock to improve, update, and keep things fresher than a barrel of hardtack since the game launched in September. Buccaneer brawlin’ updates have brought new gameplay modes, new modify-arrs, and newly-added support for macOS — including cross-platform play with Windows users!

And that’s not all… the team at Will Winn Games has been below decks preparing even more upcoming content, including two all-new stages — we hope you like things spooky and frosty! These new stages will introduce dynamic environments and hazards, like floating platforms that disappear at just the wrong moment, that are sure to spice up future pirate battles. It’ll soon be even easier to meet up with yer crewmates when matchmaking arrives in the coming weeks as well!

The latest Plunder Panic updates include:

New Game Modes:

  • Rival Crews: Prove your crew of crusty corsairs are the kings of the seven seas with a tournament-style battle in a “best of” format. Players can choose between a best of 3, 5, 7, or 9 rounds, with no limits on victory conditions!
  • Conquest: Pick from a selection of victory conditions and the first team to win — according to the selections — can claim victory! But beware: victory conditions cannot be repeated, which means each crew will need unique victories to win the day.
Some of the New Modify-Arrs Include:
  • Dead Man’s Switch: When a pirate dies, a bundle of TNT appears to take revenge on their enemies — or become a handy tool for their continued domination
  • Burning Man: Upon death a pirate will drop a Molotov Cocktail, ensuring a fiery demise for their foes
  • Free Rum!: A swig of rum before battle certainly settles the nerves, but it also makes those sea legs a bit more wobbly than usual — each pirate begins the match drunk as a skunk
  • Anger of the Gods: Each island will spawn a never-ending Cursed Idol, where lava rocks will never cease to spawn. The Idol can’t be thrown into the water, but you could throw it on the enemy ship...
  • Poseidon’s Revenge: In a classic Uno Reverse Card move, the god of the sea has decided enough is enough and changes the direction of the lava rocks — now coming out of the water and shooting up into the air
  • Low Gravity: “We're whalers on the moon, We carry a harpoon, For there ain't no whales. So we tell tall tales. And sing our whaling tune.” — turns the gravity down low for a floatier firefight
  • High Tide: You can’t control the whims of the sea — this modify-arr raises the water level past the bottom of each island, making avoiding the salty deep more difficult

All together, Plunder Panic’s various options offer hundreds of multiplayer gameplay combinations. But that’s not all. The panic only escalates as a bevy of chaotic weapons, enchanted items, and power-ups that can be wielded drop into matches. Plundering pirates can choose from a true bounty of weapons, from classics like the blunderbuss, Molotov cocktails, and sticks of dynamite, while items such as rum barrels offer stat-boosts and magical idols summon dangerous environmental attacks. HARK, you can even trap yer opponents in nets or douse them in squid ink. Only the scurviest dogs will prevail once the action starts!

Plunder Panic is out now on Steam Early Access for $9.99.

Key Features:

  • Pirate Brawlin’ — Fast-paced action-arcade gameplay with elements of platforming, combat, and strategic play
  • Play With Friends and Foes — Supporting local and online play with up to 12-players (including AI). Players can invite friends to their couch or connect online through private lobbies. Online matchmaking with friends and foes will be added in a post-launch update.
  • Become the Pirate King — Multiple win conditions offer pirate crews different gameplay strategies. Teams can coordinate to either collect enough gold, sink an enemy ship with cannons or a rowboat of TNT, or defeat the enemy captain.
  • Modify-arrs — Matches can be customized with up to six modifiers at once which change up the game rules dramatically. Randomized Captains per round? No captains at all? What about all pirates having a pair of never-ending Seagull Wings? Anything and everything can happen!
  • Swords, Explosives, and… Squids? — Chaotic items that can be wielded by players can drop into a match at any time. From weapons such as the Blunderbuss, molotov cocktails, and dynamite to stat-boosting rum barrels and enchanted idols; even squid can be used as weapons (the Kraken doesn’t take kindly to this, though).
  • Multiplayer Mode MadnessPlunder Panic will feature several exciting game modes coming in a post-launch update, including Free Play, Tournament, Conquest, Ranked and Unranked, and Captain vs. Captain 1v1
  • A Visual Treasure — A charming retro pixel-art aesthetic with adorable lil’ pirates and beautiful themed arenas

Plunder Panic is coming to Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam) in Q1 2022.
