'Kingshunt' Launches Time-limited PC Open Beta

by Rainier on June 22, 2021 @ 8:58 a.m. PDT

Kingshunt is a 3rd person online multiplayer action game, combining the genres of tower defense, real-time strategy and hack and slash.

Set in a gorgeous medieval fantasy world, Kinghunt players take part in online multiplayer battles on a colossal scale.

Join the fight and carve a path of destruction across the battlefield in a game that mixes strategy with fast-paced hero combat.

Kingshunt combines the best and most ruthless aspects of combat in tower defence and souls-like games with the tactical nous required in real-time strategy games. Choose your hero, join the fight and carve a path of destruction across the battlefield in this fast-paced thriller that mixes skill with visceral hero combat.

Kingshunt’s gameplay pits two teams of heroes against each other in intense 5v5 matches. One group, the Defenders, consists of the forces of Light and the Attackers consists of the forces of Undead. Each game is set across two intense phases with changing objectives. At the end of each step, a powerful AI-controlled Guardian appears, blocking the attackers’ progress to the next stage. Battle-hardened teams of attackers must then face-off against their foe and vanquish it to progress to the next phase.

Combat is strategic and deliberate. Survival demands superior awareness, precision, and instincts. You must commit your sword only when an opportunity opens. Calculate your opponents moves to unleash devastating counterblows.

Heroes are the essential element of Kingshunt, as the course of the game is dependent on their intervention. Play character that best fits your style and utilizes their own unique mastery of skills and abilities. As a hero gains experience, they will gain power increasing Runes and course of the battle changing Utilities, creating new unique playstyles. All heroes have distinct roles that define how they affect the battlefield.

Painstakingly created and masterfully crafted over four years by a core development team of just ten people, Kingshunt blends multiple game-genre mechanics against a medieval high-fantasy backdrop complete with castles, knights and monsters. Designed as a mix of brawler and hero shooter, Kingshunt fuses viscera ranged and melee combat with strategic depth as players spawn AI minions to help them dominate the battlefield, adding an RTS feel to the gameplay. Players can select from a  roster of unique heroes with their own weapons, skills, and fighting styles. Combatants can also earn Rune points during battles, which they can use to upgrade their character and enhance their chosen playing style.

Finnish developer Vaki Games has launched the open beta for Kingshunt on Steam.

"Join us as we play Kingshunt at the start of the Kingshunt Playtest.  Live on Steam, Twitch, and YouTube starting June 22 at (6 AM PT,  3PM CEST)

The whole purpose of testing Kingshunt is to create a solid and enjoyable experience, while iterating on game design and implementation. The important takeaway of this announcement is that we are making progress towards a playable experience. We aim to invite all Kingshunt players to participate in four day long testing session and push the limits of our Kingshunt  experience

We will continue development as planned, implementing changes based on the test, and we hope to have you all playing an even better version of the game soon. Even with the general feedback being positive, there were still some topics that were discussed in the community that we would like to address: mainly the performance, game mode, new towers, new hero and time to kill."

UPCOMING CHANGES AND UPDATES

For beta we wanted to introduce new utilities, new rune system, hero, tutorial, map and game mode updates.

New Towers

Ready to burn the opposing team to ashes? There was a clear need for new kinds of towers to play with. Flame tower acts as a close range defensive placement against attacking side minions.Frost Tower is great add for defenders arsenal. Frost Tower instantly freezes a target enemy

New Hero - Malakai

The Malakai is a murderous juggernaut of bone and metal that can smash through a shield wall without breaking stride. Its role is to provide as well as to destroy, supporting its team with heals and protective walls and creating opportunities with its snaring abilities

Also we have identified the following areas required more love:

Time to kill

The Time to Kill (TTK) is one of the discussion topics from the playtests. Since the previous test, we've made a lot of changes to the second-to-second gameplay. For example, we rebalanced characters, updated visual effects, all of which has affected the time-to-kill one way or another

However, it is important to mention that the TTK is still not final, and the feedback will be taken into consideration.

PERFORMANCE

Quite many of you reached out to us regarding performance. Some of these problems were caused by simply missing optimization, and we have addressed these issues and we will continue optimizing. During Beta we will be able to investigate these further.

Overall, we are striving for a balance between performance and quality, where players could run the game well on older hardware with some limitations in the graphics, as well as push the visuals or framerates to the moon on high-end machines. We still have some way to go, but we are continuously working on optimization and other performance fixes that should make the game run a lot smoother going forward.
