'Battlefield 2042' Introduces Five Specialists In New Gameplay Footage - Trailer

by Rainier on Sept. 3, 2021 @ 5:50 p.m. PDT

Battlefield 2042 is a groundbreaking first-person shooter set to revolutionize the modern multiplayer sandbox.

Powered by cutting-edge technology that pushes the capabilities of next generation hardware, the game drops players into a near-future, all-out-war experience that includes the franchise’s hallmark, game-changing destruction.

Featuring matches filled with up to 128 players and massive-scale maps on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PCs (Xbox One and PS4 are capped at 64 players and reduced map sizes), this unprecedented scale adds a new dimension to multiplayer battles.

Battlefield 2042 also ups the action with the inclusion of real-time events that reshape the battlefield and tactical combat. All new weapons, vehicles and gadgets give players the freedom to be strategic and create jaw-dropping, only-in-Battlefield moments.

In Battlefield 2042, the world is on the brink. Shortages of food, energy and clean water have led to dozens of failed nations, creating the greatest refugee crisis in human history. Among these Non-Patriated, or No-Pats, are families, farmers, engineers - and even soldiers. Amidst this crisis, the United States and Russia draw the world into an all-out war. No-Pat Specialists join both sides, not fighting for a flag, but for the future of the Non-Patriated in this new world.

Players will jump into the boots of Specialists, an all-new type of playable soldier for the franchise. Inspired by the traditional four Battlefield classes, Specialists will be equipped with their own unique Specialist Trait and Specialty, and will have fully customizable loadouts. As a Specialist, players will have access to a cutting-edge arsenal of weapons, equipment and vehicles to use in battle. These powerful new tools give creative players a wealth of options as they find the perfect combination to fit their play style and outsmart and outgun opponents on the battlefield.

In Battlefield 2042 you will step into the boots of Specialists, an all-new type of playable soldier for the franchise. Inspired by the traditional Battlefield Classes, Specialists will be equipped with their own unique Specialist Trait and Specialty, and will have fully customizable Loadouts.

At launch there will be a total of 10 Specialists. So far, we’ve shown you 5 of them: Boris, Casper, Falck and Mackay and Irish. You can expect further details on the remaining 5 later this year.

Kimble "Irish" Graves

A natural-born leader, Kimble "Irish" Graves, is the commander of the Specialists aboard the Exodus. A native of Brooklyn, New York, his natural leadership qualities and combat skills help keep the Non-Patriated safe from harm. Having seen the cost of war first hand as a former Marine, this skilled engineer is dedicated to protecting both his squad as well as those who cannot fight for themselves.

Irish excels at fortifying positions on the battlefield, and creating small outposts with which others can use as a rallying point to make an attack.

Irish's abilities are:

  • Fortification System: Includes the DCS Deplayable Cover to protect from bullets and explosives, and the APS-36 Shootdown Sentinel to take down explosive projectiles.
  • Veteran: Provides armor, with additional bonusse from downed enemies.

Webster Mackay

Outdoorsman. Nomad. Soldier. Mackay is an ass-kicker with a conscience. Following his father's footsteps, Mackay joined the Canadian military in his teens. At the height of his military career, he was a member of Joint Task Force 2 as a part of a counter-terrorism unit.

After retiring from the military, he followed his dreams of exploring and living off the grid. Now, this Assault soldier fights for the Non-Patriated to make right a regret from his military days.

Mackay's abilities are:

  • Grappling hook: Fires a rope that attaches to surfaces. When attached, the rope is retracted and the player gets pulled towward the attach point.
  • Nimble: Allows the player to move more quickly while aiming down sights, further enhacing their speed-related advantages.

Maria Falck

A veteran Support, Maria Falck, has a strong will that cannot be shaken by danger, fear, or rank. A skilled medic, she served in the German army for six years, touring North Africa and the Middle East – in an effort to bring a positive impact upon the world

Now, she searches for her missing son, David, after hearing that he may have become involved with a No-Pat group.

Falck's abilities are:

  • S21 Syrette Pistol: Fires a syringe at friendlies to provide healing. If fired at an enemy, the syringe will do damage.
  • Combat Surgeon: Allows the player to return downed allies to combat with full health when reviving

Pyotr "Boris" Guskovsky

Self-motivated and self-fulfilling, Boris seeks to acquire power and control in a chaotic world. While his leadership skills may be a bit aggressive to some, there is no denying his skills in the field.

This Russian-born Engineer is a very experienced weapons expert on the Task Force, particularly when it comes to defensive tactics, although his true attachment to the team is suspect. Nevertheless, Boris is trusted to get the job done, albeit with maximum collateral damage.

Boris's abilities are:
  • SG-36 Sentry System: Automatically spots and engages enemy targets detected within a certain area
  • Sentry Operator: Spots the enemy target when the sentry locks on to the enemy in question

Wikus "Casper" Van Daele

Recon soldier Wikus is a loner – and the unflappable, calm presence on the Task Force. A former intelligence-gathering operative in South Africa, Wikus is a master of camouflage and long-range engagement.

After stumbling onto a conspiracy involving a senior officer that put the lives of those of his unit and local civilians in danger, Wikus was falsely accused of murder and fled the country. He aligned himself with the No-Pats in hopes of being able to return home one day if there is still a home to return to.

Casper's abilities are:

  • OV-P Recon Drone: Spots nearby moving targets and can disorient enemies by using EMP blasts. Can also be used to designate targets for lock-on weapons
  • Movement Sensor: Alerts the player to approaching enemies, both while boots on the ground and when piloting the Recon Drone.

Battlefield 2042 includes 3 distinct multiplayer experiences:

  • All-Out Warfare - the next generation of fan-favorite modes Conquest and Breakthrough, featuring the largest maps ever for the franchise and for the first time, up to 128 players (on XSX, PS5 and PC). Experience the intensity of All-Out Warfare in large-scale battles like never before on maps filled with dynamic weather, dangerous environmental hazards and spectacular world events that see tornadoes rip across the map and sandstorms block out the sun.
  • Hazard Zone - an all-new, high-stakes, squad-based game-type for the Battlefield franchise that is a modern take on the multiplayer experience that is distinctly DICE but very different from All-Out Warfare’s Conquest or Breakthrough modes.
  • Portal Mode - A first for the Battlefield franchise, Battlefield Portal is a community-driven platform designed to offer a huge variety of imaginative experiences by giving players the tools to set their own rules and build their own definitive Battlefield experience - and share them with other people.

All Out Warfare launches with seven maps total. Let’s take a quick tour of those:

  • Kaleidoscope [Sogdo, South Korea] This cityscape features dense roadways and skyscrapers that can be explored, or if you’ve a wingsuit, leapt off. It’s here that a tornado that dwarves the glittering buildings will make its presence known.
  • Manifest [Brani Island, Singapore] Supply lines are under threat in this key location for global trade.
  • Orbital [Kourou, French Guiana] Players will battle in the shadow of a towering space rocket pad that’s counting down to an imminent launch.
  • Discarded [Alang, India] Clash around, through and on top of massive ship hulks and the surrounding cranes.
  • Renewal [Eastern Desert, Egypt] Wrestle for control of an agriculture technology centre in the Egyptian Desert.
  • Hourglass [Doha, Qatar] An approaching sandstorm will shift the tide of war taking place at the heart of a city.
  • Breakaway [Queen Maud Land, Antarctica] From hot deserts to icy landscapes: oil and gas are the key resources being fought over here. Insert on the mountaintops with a wingsuit and you can dive into industrial buildings below.

Post launch, Battlefield 2042’s first year promises four seasons of content, bringing with them four new Specialists plus new locations. Each season is marked by a new Battle Pass. EA confirms that new locations will be accessible to all players.

Available now for pre-order, players will receive early access to the Open Beta and have three different editions to choose from, including the Battlefield 2042 Gold Edition for $89.99 on PC and $99.99 on console, or the Battlefield 2042 Ultimate Edition for $109.99 on PC or $119.99 on console.

Battlefield 2042 is coming to retail and digital storefronts for Xbox One, PS4 and PC ($59.99) and for Xbox Series X|S and PS5 ($69.99) on October 22, 2021.
