'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33' Shows Off Gameplay And Locations, Reveals Star-Studded Voice Cast, Targets Spring 2025 Launch - Screens & Trailer

Inspired by classic JRPGs and action titles alike, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG that will set you on a harrowing journey you won't soon forget.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sets itself apart with immersive reactive turn-based battles, a mature and moving narrative and a stunning, evocative art style inspired by French and Parisienne art and architecture. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 promises players a beautiful story-driven experience and an emotional cast of characters that will stay with them long after the credits roll.

Once a year, the Paintress wakes to paint a cursed number upon her monolith and everyone of that age instantly turns to smoke and fades away. Year by year, that number ticks down. Tomorrow she’ll wake and paint “33.” Join Gustave, and his fellow Expeditioners as they embark on a desperate quest to break the Paintress’ cycle of death once and for all. Retracing the steps of dozens of failed Expeditions before them, players will overcome powerful enemies and fight to save the future of their world. Set in a dreamlike world, the story unfolds as fantasy and art converge, backed by an enchanting soundtrack to create a breathtaking story unlike any other.

Powered by Unreal Engine 5, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, or ‘Expedition 33,’ is an innovative reactive turn-based RPG with immersive real-time offensive and defensive commands to enhance combat, making battles more engaging than ever. Players will master their offensive skills and magical abilities, dodge, parry and counter enemy assaults in real time, and target enemy weak points using a ranged free-aim system to overcome seemingly overwhelming odds. Furthermore, players will be able to customize each character’s unique stat growth, skill tree and gear alongside a wide range of learnable passive traits, offering endless opportunities to fine-tune their preferred strategies.

Sandfall Interactive revealed a trailer for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, showing fresh new gameplay and revealing the game’s voice cast.

In today’s new emotional trailer, players are introduced to the primary cast of characters (including two new characters Verso, voiced by Ben Starr and Renoir, voiced by Andy Serkis) they will meet when Expedition 33 launches.

Alongside the heroic Expeditioners and their pursuit of destroying the Paintress and freeing humanity from her cycle of death, players will also encounter mysterious and dangerous strangers who seem motivated by entirely different, and conflicting, forces.

Expedition 33 features an voice cast of both video game and cinematic talent breathing life into the characters and world, including:

  • Charlie Cox (Daredevil: Born Again, Stardust) as Gustave, a resourceful and dedicated engineer who devotes his final year of life to defeating the Paintress and reclaiming a future for Lumière’s children.
  • Jennifer English (Baldur’s Gate III, Elden Ring) as Maelle, a shy loner who sees the Expedition as her chance to explore the world beyond Lumière and forge her own destiny.
  • Kirsty Rider (The Sandman, Sifu) as Lune, a passionate scholar and mage intent on unravelling the mystery of the Paintress, and entrusted with charting a path forward for the Expedition.
  • Shala Nyx (The Old Guard, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty) as Sciel, a cheerful and serene warrior. Having long accepted the brutality of the world, Sciel is untroubled by the spectre of failure and deeply committed to the Expedition’s cause.
  • Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings, Black Panther) as Renoir, a forceful and passionate man, Renoir knows that victory demands sacrifice, and he is fully prepared to pay the price.
  • Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI, Warframe: 1999) as Verso, a dangerous stranger, Verso is an outsider of unknown origins who closely tracks the Expedition.
  • Also starring Rich Keeble (Good Omens), Devora Wilde (Baldur’s Gate III), Tracy Wiles (Baldur’s Gate III) and Maxence Cazorla (Ineffable) in unannounced roles.
Developing the characters was a multi-part process, which included charting a detailed history of Lumière and each character’s family history and thinking through how prior generations responded to the Paintress. These factors all played a role in who each character is and what they are trying to overcome.
In many ways, the process of writing is the ultimate RPG. It’s an extended thought experiment where we place our characters, with their backstories, in these particular situations, and step into their shoes. What do they do? How do they feel? How have their past experiences shaped them, and how does that influence their choices today?
Cast and characters aren’t the only new elements in this trailer. Attentive fans may have recognized new locations, alongside new enemies. Golgra and The Tisseur are two fearsome adversaries who will test your reflexes in our reactive turn-based combat.
