'Atomic Picnic' Available On Steam Early Access, Reveals Development Roadmap - Trailer

by Rainier on Nov. 7, 2024 @ 8:00 a.m. PST

Atomic Picnic is a co-op 3rd person roguelite shooter where you get together with up to 4 friends to fight hordes of monsters, gain experience to upgrade your weapons, and create the best build possible to survive.

Get together with up to 4 friends to fight hordes of monsters, gain experience to upgrade your weapons, and create the best build possible to survive. Every Picnic is different, each containing a variety of upgrades that can radically change the way you play.

Atomic Picnic features a Survivors mode where up to 4 players survive non-stop waves of enemies in a 3D Third-Person Perspective, with fast-paced gameplay that completely subverts this nascent genre.

The fabric of existence changed when the world was devastated by a giant explosion known as the Harvest Festival. Weird things started happening, mountains started flying, old men went back to being kids, and kids were born with bunny ears and fur. Human society took a great hit and some places in the world were left inhabitable, filled with monsters and strange artifacts, capable of generating energy or imbuing powers in people.

Now, adventurers known as Stalkers scavenge these desolated areas in search of valuable loot, fame and glory. Join them in their search for a better future and try to survive!

BitCake Studio and Mad Mushroom are proud to announce that Atomic Picnic is now available through Steam Early Access at $19.99.

“We’ve been working on Atomic Picnic for over two years, and now that launch day has come, we can’t wait to see what players around the world think about our game,” said Edu Lamhut, Creative Director at BitCake Studio. “This game has been created with the community through several public playtests, and that won’t stop now. We have much more we want to build and add to Atomic Picnic during Early Access, and community feedback will continue to be key. We’re listening, so please keep the feedback coming!”

In Early Access, the developers at BitCake Studio are introducing a massive wave of features for Loners to cut their Picnic teeth on:

  • Four Hungry Loners: Ash, Hani, Bonnie, and JD are ready to Picnic! Each Loner boasts unique stats and abilities, allowing for varying playstyles. Try each out and find which suits you! Permanently upgrade character stats via Mementos, which are acquired through Discoveries as Loners complete Picnics.
  • Mementos and Discoveries: Loners will scour maps for valuable resources that unlock 18 different Mementos: character and gear upgrades for future runs. Completing specific challenges within Picnics will reveal Discoveries, which in turn grant new Mementos, characters, and weapons.
  • Three Maps to Picnic On:
    • Train Plateau: Set up your Picnic in an abandoned trainyard, ripe for resource scavenging. If you’re lucky, you might find something worth cold cash! You can also come back to the Plateau in night mode, facing off against a different set of even tougher enemies.
    • Twilight Dam: What cataclysmic event ravaged this dam? Picnic here to explore this mysteriously wrecked rift, in day or night mode!
    • City of Sand: Two dimensions, one city. Explore and Picnic in a glorious city caught within the sands of time…or what’s left of it.
  • Curious About Curios: In-run upgrades known as Curios represent the dramatic changes a Loner’s build will go through as they progress a Picnic.
    • Standard Curios unleash your Loner’s full potential as its stats and abilities dynamically adapt to every acquired Curios.
    • Cursed Curios offer additional boosts but come with a trade-off, potentially lowering other stats!
    • Evolved Curios, created by combining standard Curios, represent the pinnacle for a character’s build and provide unparalleled power.
  • Floating on Air: Loners need to be mobile in the wasteland to survive - and they have Impulse Gear to fling, dash, and swing at breakneck speed around each map. Use Air Gear to move in the air, and Gear Dash to speed along the ground.
  • Picnic Objectives: Within a Picnic run, Loners will tackle a variety of objectives—from defeating a set number of enemies to toppling specific bosses and destroying pillars in different parts of the map. Each Picnic hosts its own set of challenges for players to accomplish in order to progress the run and make it home alive.
  • Wasteland Weaponry: Pick your poison: five traditional weapons –  an assault rifle, shotgun, grenade launcher, sniper rifle, and pistol – are at your disposal. Tear down the crowd with these firearms, or blast ‘em to bits with four unique grenades!
  • Enemies Galore: In the wasteland, terrors lie in wait for unsuspecting Loners. Face off against 11 distinct enemy types, and when you’ve conquered them, take on three minibosses to gear up for the final showdown with two massive and fearsome end-run bosses.

The team at BitCake Studio has also shared a roadmap of future content to be added during Early Access, which includes:

  • More Curios: Expanding the amount of base Curios, Cursed Curios, and Evolutions available during runs.
  • New Mementos: More opportunities to build your character between runs.
  • New Characters: More unique characters to play as, and design builds around.
  • New Enemies, Mini-Bosses, and Bosses: Growing the ranks of enemies and bosses you’ll face in Atomic Picnic.
  • New Weapons & Mod System: New weapons will be added, as will a Weapon Mod System, giving players more ways to customize their characters and builds.
  • And Much More: Twitch integration, new maps, new Combat Director AI, and much more are also in the works!

Every stalker's best friend is the AIR GEAR, a tool they use to reach heights and distances otherwise impossible. With this tool, you can zip and dash around the map, using the terrain's verticality in your favor.

Every decision in Atomic Picnic can lead to a totally different build and playstyle. The more upgrades you pick and combine, the stronger you become. Every run is unique!

Start a Picnic either solo or with up to three more friends in Online Co-Op. Each of you will have your own build, but have to cooperate and level up to defeat the enemy waves and conquer objectives! So be careful, coordination is vital.

Key Features:

  • Skillful Movement: Masterfully moving through each level, players experience a fast-paced and deep movement system, skillfully dashing and swinging around the world at high speeds.
  • Overpowered Builds: Going beyond the limits of their potential, players strive to defeat a nearly endless horde of adversaries. They will level up to unlock new abilities and weapon upgrades, experimenting with builds to find the perfect combination that will carry them to victory.
  • Massive Boss Fights: There’s nowhere to hide! Players will have to join together and strategize to take down massive, battlefield-sized monsters.
  • Bullet Heaven with Friends: Atomic Picnic is the first co-op roguelike shooter that includes a “collect-a-thon” progression system of the “Survivors-like” genre.
  • Teamwork Makes the Dream work: The game thrives on the pure joy and excitement of playing with friends. Air Gear in hand, players masterfully dash through ever-growing hordes at breakneck speeds, creating memorable moments of heroic teamwork in the face of chaos.
  • A Vibrant World with a Grim Backdrop: The world of Atomic Picnic is bright and colorful but the truth is dark and grim, with uninhabited lands infested with dangerous creatures. Loners brave these dangers for fame, loot, and glory

Atomic Picnic is coming to PC (Steam).
