'Farthest Frontier' Cats & Dogs DLC Coming In May, Will Add Breed Animal Companions, New Buildings, Threats, Decorations And More - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on April 30, 2026 @ 7:00 a.m. PDT

Farthest Frontier is a town-builder/strategy game where you protect and guide your people as you forge a town from untamed wilderness at the edge of the known world.

invites players to protect and guide a small band of settlers to forge a town at the edge of the known world.

From harvesting raw materials to hunting, fishing and farming to survive, building a thriving homestead will be fraught with challenge. Players will need to produce crafted items to trade, consume, equip and fight as you battle for survival against the elements and outside threats.

With a vast array of materials and crops to harvest, dozens of unique buildings to expand your town with and a deep farming system - right down to soil fertility and seasonal rotations - the depth of Farthest Frontier is vast. Whether you choose to play on pacifist and avoid combat altogether or engage with varying levels of raider difficulty to raise the stakes for your town’s survival, enemies you'll face aren't always from raiders and foreign armies seeking plunder.

Ensuring your villagers have clean water to stop outbreaks of dysentery and cholera while making sure they are properly clothed to reduce chances of contracting tetanus, rabies or frostbite is key to survival. Failure to manage their needs and secure food properly will see disease creep into your settlement.

Offering beautiful fully customizable maps with randomized terrain generation and resource distribution, players are free to control the amount of water or mountains they desire for extreme maps, leading to unique challenges.

Crate Entertainment reveals the most consequential addition in city-builder history: Pets.

On May 14th, Cats & Dogs arrives as Farthest Frontier’s first DLC, bringing both cherished animal companions and critter combatants to the celebrated medieval city-builder.

Can you pet that dog? Absolutely.

Players will be able to start settlements that include either a dog or cat that traveled across the wilderness with the aspiring settlers, in addition to being able to purchase kennels to breed multiple variations to add to the city. These new companions will add other layers to the experience as well. Cats will wander settlements like they own the place and keep rat populations in check, while dogs will take on jobs like protecting hunters or defending crops and livestock from the newly added foxes and groundhogs.

The Cats & Dogs DLC launches on May 14th to deliver fresh charm and make your settlement come alive with new activity, whether you are starting anew or you’re a seasoned explorer of the frontier:

  • Breed Animal Companions — Purchase dogs and cats from the trading post to breed them in your kennels, with 18 different possible variations. Every new settlement starts with a dog or cat companion.
  • New Buildings Construct Cat and Dog Kennels to feed and care for your pets, and a Doghouse to have your animal companions best positioned near your crops and livestock.
  • New Threats — Groundhogs can infest crop fields and devastate yields, while Foxes will hunt down helpless chickens.
  • New Decorations — Embellish your settlement with the new unique Hedge Garden, Topiary Garden, and Trellis, with multiple variations of each.
"As they did in historical times, cats and dogs provide vital services, from pest control to protection,” shares Crate Entertainment CEO and Creative Director Arthur Bruno. “Cats help keep rats at bay while dogs battle the evil triumvirate of groundhogs, foxes and deer, hellbent on ravaging your crops and chicken coops. They also enrich your town with a new layer of life, providing companionship to villagers and entertainment with a range of cute animated interactions, including belly rubs, tricks, and, of course, pooping. While it may look like a small addition on paper, pets bring a new dimension of life and activity to towns that is a lot of fun to watch."
