In Psychonauts 2, Raz fulfills his dreams and visit the Psychonauts Headquarters as a fully established agent. When he gets there, he finds it's not the perfect place he expected, and he quickly realizes that the Psychonauts need him more than he needs them.

Psychonauts was released in 2005 to much critical acclaim, and has since become a cult classic, with a huge fan base around the world.

The original game follows the story of a young psychic named Razputin in his quest to join an elite group of international psychic secret agents, the Psychonauts. He runs away from the circus and breaks into their secret training facility, Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp. As he begins his training by psychically delving inside the consciousnesses of his tutors and those around him, he realizes all is not as it seems, and soon embarks upon a psychic odyssey through a variety of levels set inside the minds of misfits, monsters, and madmen.

The sequel will be developed in house by Double Fine Productions, with Tim Schafer as project lead, alongside original collaborators including co-writer Erik Wolpaw, artists Peter Chan, Scott Campbell, and Nathan Stapley, composer Peter McConnell, voice actors Richard Horvitz and Nicki Rapp, and voice director Khris Brown.

Starbreeze acquired the publishing rights for Double Fine’s “Psychonauts 2” in 2017 with a commitment to invest 8 MUSD for the development of the title, and has now has signed an agreement where all publishing rights, related agreements and commitments for the title ate assigned to Microsoft, receiving 13.2 MUSD.

“As we continue the work of securing long-term financing for Starbreeze, it’s extremely important that we find the best possible structure for the company in the long run. Although we see the Publishing unit as part of the core business, it is a cash intense business and requires continuous investments to enable the products to be launched successfully. We definitely want to continue being a best in class Publishing partner for external studios in the future, but our main focus right now is to secure the continued operations of the internal games development and self-publishing units”, said Mikael Nermark, acting Starbreeze CEO.

As previously announced, Starbreeze will focus on its core business of games development and publishing.

Xbox announced the intent to acquire legendary game development studio Double Fine Productions, which will bring the total number of development studios under Xbox Game Studios to 15. Led by industry veteran Tim Schafer, the addition of this boundlessly creative studio will reinforce the Xbox team's commitment to developing original content with memorable characters and unexpected stories.

Psychonauts 2 is set to release in 2020, on PCs and consoles.
