About Judy

As WP's managing editor, I edit review and preview articles, attempt to keep up with the frantic pace of Rainier's news posts, and keep our reviewers on deadline, which is akin to herding cats. When I have a moment to myself and don't have my nose in a book, I like to play action/RPG, adventure and platforming games.

3. 'The Last of Us: Part II' (PS4)

by Judy on Jan. 27, 2019 @ 12:00 a.m. PST

The Last of Us Part II is a sequel to the action/adventure series set a few years after the original, revolving around Ellie as main character instead of Joel.

Chris Barnes: Sometimes, I boot up The Last of Us to replay the intro if I need a good cry.  Kidding (sort of).  The intro shows just how good Naughty Dog is at creating riveting narratives in video games.  Beyond this, the facial animations really captured the feral rawness that encapsulated every little encounter within the game.  Six years later, we now get to embark on another intense journey through the infected wastelands of America through the eyes of Ellie.  Assuming the game's graphical fidelity is on par, if not better than Uncharted 4, I suspect The Last of Us: Part II will win the "most bleak and intense game of all time" award from me.

Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: The emotional and gripping story of The Last Of Us touched the hearts of gamers across the world. It seemed like it might be a self-contained story, but The Last of Us II allows us to revisit the bleak but engaging world. Returning to the shoes of Ellie many years after the events of the first game, we get to see how she has been surviving in a world seemingly without hope. All you need to know is that it's more The Last of Us, and that will be enough for anyone who played the first title.

Joe Doyle: The first game was just so well-told, and I'm a sucker for a good story, which seems to be paramount in the coming game. The zombie craze died out a little while ago; the first game seemed to be the tail end of it, so I'm interested to see how this game plays out for other people.  The presentation at E3 2018 was so warm and intimate, which was a stark contrast to the dark, electrified presentations of most others, so I'm also curious about the tone of the game.

Rhi Mitera: It's not a hyperbole to say that The Last of Us revolutionized the zombie shooter genre. It's considered by many to be one of the greatest games ever. Those are big shoes for the sequel to fill, but Naughty Dog looks like it's up to the challenge. I can't wait to see how the studio plans to top what it's already done.

Fran Soto: Released in 2013, The Last of Us was a pure emotional work of art. Focusing on a cast of deep, interesting characters fighting for survival in a cruel world gave us vested interest in the game. When we thought it was the end, Naughty Dog decides to tease a Part II that tells the story of an older Ellie and Joel. With heavy hitters like the Nathan Drake franchise under its belt, Naughty Dog's upcoming installment for The Last of Us has us holding our breath for another work of art.
