A new study by the University of Missouri-Columbia claims that there might be a link between video game violence and increased aggressive real-life behavior in gamers. Study subjects who played violent video games showed diminished brain responses to images of real-life violence which, according to the study's authors, correlates to aggressive behavior.

Midway’s real-time strategy game Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War puts players in the role of some of history’s greatest generals, is now scheduled for release in June 2006. The game’s development is now being led internally out of the Midway San Diego studio, with a group that includes game industry veterans from the teams that developed Heroes of Might and Magic and Lords of Everquest.

Strategy First and Valve Corporation are pleased to announce the Steam launch date for S.C.S: Dangerous Waters and Space Empires IV Deluxe. S.C.S: Dangerous Waters is a naval simulation game, and will be available via Steam for $39.99. interview with former Apogee developer Jim Norwood (known for Shadow Warrior and Bio Menace) reveals the juicy bit that he is currently working on an RPG for EA, Lord of the Rings: The White Council. After The Third Age, this would be EA's second attempt at developing an RPG set in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings universe. While there are no details, The White Council is mentioned in the trilogy as a body formed to prevent Sauron from obtaining the One Ring, and includes Gandalf but also Saruman before turning evil. The newest issue of CGW has some info on the first Guild Wars expansion. Guild Wars: Factions will introduce two new professions (assassin and ritualist), 25 new skills and 6 armor sets for old classes, a full campaign set on a new Eastern-themed continent Cantha with 3 nations, and faction-based PvP where guild alliances will battle to control various areas of the world map. Guild Wars: Factions will be standalone, although then only the new continent will be playable.

Valve's latest Steam Update has a few details on what to expect in the near future. This month, new map releases for both DoD: Source and C-S: Source. For Day of Defeat. We'll also be releasing a completely rebuilt version of the classic map Kalt, which is set in the winter. There has even been some custom rendering work done in the Source engine to make the snow and ice look realistic. For Counter-Strike: Source, a new Militia will be released, reworked and, like the recently released Nuke, it will include HDR. A new Rag Doll Kung Fu demo is now also available.

Take 2 today announced preliminary net sales of $1.2 billion for its 2005 fiscal year and Q4 net sales of $308 million. The results reveal that College Hoops 2K6 and Top Spin 2 have been pushed back from Q1 to Q2 2006 to provide additional time for development. A few new games were also introduced, including the port of GTA: Liberty City Stories to a current-gen console (most likely the PS2), and two new titles for the PSP, including an all-new GTA offering.
