World of Warcraft has been a worldwide success and enabled Vivendi Universal Games to return to profitability. VUG's earnings operations were EUR 13 million, compared to a loss of EUR 168 million in the first half of 2004, mainly due to the increase in net sales and reduced operating expenses as a result of the recovery plan introduced in 2004, but also benefited from the worldwide success of World of Warcraft (4 million players at the end of August) and a strong increase of subscriptions with higher margins.

an updated battleplan looking ahead to what WoW players can expect in the coming months leading up to BlizzCon and the expansion announcement. In a statement on the official
World of Warcraft website outlaying what the future holds for WoW, Lead Producer Shane Dabiri confirmed the long rumored fact that a World of Warcraft expansion pack is indeed in the works (
thanks Blizzplanet). No details were revealed, but Shane simply stated : "Some have asked about an expansion and what it might hold. I wanted to let players know that it is in the works, and we’ll release details as soon as we can."

Blizzard today announced that its MMO World of Warcraft has surpassed two million paying subscribers worldwide. As the game's worldwide population continues to grow, so does the game itself: Blizzard recently introduced the highly anticipated player-vs.-player (PvP) Honor System and the game's first two Battlegrounds, Alterac Valley and Warsong Gulch. Blizzard President Mike Morhaime has
addressed the WoW community to shed some light on the recent downtime and apologies for the problems some of the players may have been experiencing on the servers. "I am sure that many of you are wondering what has been going on with the World of Warcraft servers, as there was another period of extended downtime during peak hours last night.... Last night, we took down 20 realms for emergency maintenance.... Players on these same 20 realms also experienced service interruptions earlier in the week... Therefore, in addition to the three days already credited to these players as a result of the server issues earlier in the week, players on these realms will be receiving an additional four-day credit to their accounts." Over the weekend Blizzard updated some of the World of Warcraft database hardware in order to improve performance. This update required extended downtime for certain realms as data was transferred from the launch servers to the new servers.
