As if the StarForce copy protection isn't the center of enough controversy these days, the company decided to shamelessly promote the use of its anti-piracy application by ... linking to
BitTorent to download a pirated game. Recently, Stardock's
Galactic Civilizations II got attention because it doesn't use any protection but sells increasingly well, apart from a serial code required to receive free updates & patches. Apparently, StarForce feels threatened by this and, to seemingly prove copy protections are required, facilitates piracy by publicly spreading information where to download pirated games.

San Jose Mercury News is reporting that the FBI cracked down on piracy in an 11-nation sting operation hunting for copies of the latest Star Wars film and other movies, games and software programs, worth at least $50 million. The FBI has arrested four Chinese nationals in New York for allegedly distributing video game consoles that contain Nintendo's famous game software. With approximately 40 FBI agents, they seized more than 60,000 illegal products during five raids on April 13. Niko Partners today announced that the videogame market in China is experiencing rapid growth, particularly in the online games segment. According to a new report released by the company, online games revenue is forecast to reach $2.0 billion by 2009. Macrovision today announced the results of a gaming piracy study that shows significant losses experienced by the gaming industry due to software piracy. The surveys of 6,000 Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation 2 users show that 21% of gamers play pirated games, but 73% would have bought the game within one month if a free version had not been readily available. This high level of piracy on console systems, which are generally considered to be secure closed systems, is surprising.
