Sony have revealed that a new PS2 version is currently in production and will be released in Japan May 15th. This new version will support playback of recordable DVD formats, and will boast improved DVD playback. A new DVD remote is also planned, which allows you to power the unit and open the disc tray! European and US release date not available yet!
