GSC Game World sent out a newsletter officially confirming the Q1 2007 release date of the long-awaited survival FPS, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. The oft-delayed title was originally scheduled for a 2003 release so we're not sure if this date is set in stone, but it's something.

GSC just confirmed that after a year's break its survival FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, published worldwide by THQ (except ex-USSR), is to be demonstrated at E3. The press-only presentation featuring a live singleplayer demo will be held at the THQ booth.

Although it exceeded predictions, THQ's sales and income were down compared to last year, in line with most other big publishers. Big sellers were WWE SmackDown vs. Raw, Bratz Rock Angelz, The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer and SpongeBob SquarePants: Lights Camera PANTS! Unfortunately PC gamers are getting a punch in the stomach as THQ revealed in its subsequent conference call that STALKER and Supreme Commander have been delayed until 2007. An article on
Gamemag.ru, translated by GGMania, seems to indicate that STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl might be in some serious trouble. THQ is said to have cut off financing back in November, a team developing a new graphics engine left shortly after being brought on board, taking with them the source and part of the original develpment team has either been fired or moved onto another project. End of last year THQ ordered an audit of the project and a representative is expected to be on site shortly, and possibly take STALKER to another developer.
Update : GSC's Oleg Yavorskiy says "only 5 people were let go as the new graphics engine nears completion, others went to Heroes of Annihilated Empires. STALKER is almost finished."

A group of stalkers has for the first time reached the very heart of the Zone – Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and brings about a cataclysm on the brink of a catastrophe. An immense blowout of anomalous energy changes the Zone. There are no more reliable and relatively safe roads. The entire levels vanish in the outbursts of anomalies. Stalkers and even expeditions die or end up sealed on the lost territories. New areas, which remained unknown since the time of the Zone emergence, appear on the Zone map.

While it was already known that GSC World's oft delayed FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl was no longer expected in 2005, there was no specific date given for when it was rescheduled. Earlier reports indicated it could be as late as fall 2006, but during THQ's quaterly financial results conference call it became clear that we may not have to wait THAT long as, while it is not listed in its current fiscal year which ends March 2006, THQ's CEO Brian Farrell stated it would instead be released shortly thereafter and an early 2006 release was still not ruled out.

While
earlier this month it came to light that GSC Game World's oft delayed FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl will not be making any appearance this year, a specific new time frame was not announced. Through a
release schedule for THQ France it has now been revealed we could possibly have to wait more than a year, as it is tentatively listed for autumn 2006. In the meantime, three new screens to, hardly, make up for it...
UPDATE : THQ France admitted making a mistake in their release schedule, which is now under revision, and informed us that STALKER is scheduled for, somewhere in, 2006.
