DreamWorks Wants to Take over 'Splinter Cell' Movie Project From Paramount

by Rainier on Aug. 12, 2005 @ 1:47 a.m. PDT

In Splinter Cell, the player controls Sam Fisher, a field operative of a secretive "black-ops" NSA sub-agency called Third Echelon, geared up to infiltrate high-security strongholds, seize critical intelligence, destroy threatening data and neutralize the enemy - all without leaving a trace.

Under the terms of the Paramount pact, Peter Berg ("Friday Night Lights") was to direct the pic. He signed a holding deal in order to get the franchise quickly into production, but with all the management shifts at Paramount, the project stalled. When the holding deal expired, Berg dropped out and moved on to "The Kingdom," set up at Universal. Ovitz opted to repackage "Splinter."

The original script for "Splinter Cell" was written by Berg, "Splinter Cell" vidgame writer J.T. Petty and John J. McLaughlinJohn J. McLaughlin. Michael Ovitz, Clancy's longtime manager, is still producing while Clancy and Yves Guillemot, chief of vidgame publisher Ubisoft, are exec producing.

"Splinter Cell," now in its third edition, follows the adventures of government spy Sam Fisher as he's dispatched to infiltrate an international terrorist syndicate and stop a high-tech threat.
