After the Fall combines an unprecedented VR world shared with players worldwide, a cinematic and atmospheric campaign, action-packed solo and multiplayer gameplay, and an endgame built from the ground up for VR.
Set in a frozen, post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, After the Fall pits you and up to three friends against unprecedented, huge waves of monstrous, undead creatures known as the Snowbreed. And when I say huge, I don’t just mean in numbers; you’ll be facing off against some of VR’s most colossal brutes and repulsive deformities.
In an alternate 1980s, the age of decadence and delight, humanity started experimenting with a new type of designer drugs to elevate the human potential beyond known limits.
Meanwhile, the planet suffered: climate change ran hot and cold to extremes, resulting in a new ice age. To cope with the cold, people only consumed more drugs which led to horrible mutations – the deadly Snowbreed. Now, 20 years later, Los Angeles lies in ruins and survivors are clinging to life in a frozen city roaming with mutated terrors.
Through full cross-platform multiplayer, After the Fall is bringing together the VR community in a way that has rarely been done before. Today’s video showcases the game’s signature platform-agnostic co-op gameplay, captured from all platform perspectives in a cross-platform play session.
Besides the 4-player co-op PvE content that is at the core of After the Fall, we recently unveiled the “Tundradome” arena as an extra activity where players can duke it out in 4v4 Team Deathmatch PVP! We know from experience that playing with friends isn’t always peachy (I’m a pretty try-hard casual raider), so having the option to vent out any lingering frustrations is exactly what the Tundradome offers.
Welcome to the Tundradome
Previously part of combat training, the discovery of humans being able to get revived via boosters and prolong their lives has led to a darker form of entertainment.
Whether it’s to take out frustration or relieve tensions between Harvest Runners, they are invited to keep their skills sharp against opponents that aren’t as predictable as the Snowbreed. If they dare, Runners can settle debates with live ammo in the Tundradome. Harvest Runners from all over Los Angeles gather here to test their skill and for the survivors, combatants and non-combatants alike, these neo-gladiatorial battles are the contact sport of this era.
Broadcast to the different hubs, it is flavored with spectacle, and it is a chance for Harvest Runners to become legends of the arena.
How it works
At launch, After the Fall will launch with 2 Tundradome arenas for fast-paced player-vs-player combat in Team Deathmatch. You can jump into a lobby via the social hub’s enlisting machines either solo, where you’ll be matchmade with other players, or go in with a pre-made squad of 4 to slay against another team.
Players have full agency on how they want to fill up an 8-player lobby, be it friends-only or random players running around in our 32-player social hub. You will also be able to matchmake against Harvest Runners on other supported platforms via crossplay!
Combat
Players are stripped from their equipment and spawn each match with the basic Service Pistol. It’s then up to you to find other weapons around the map before your opponent does, to gain the advantage. Whichever team reaches the elimination target (or has the most eliminations before time runs out) wins the match!
Harvest Runners won’t be the only thing you’ll run into; Snowbreed will occasionally spawn into the maps as well, so keep your head on a swivel.
The Tundradome will be expanded upon with more modes and maps post-launch, and we hope you’ll enjoy jumping into this mode for a change of pace in After the Fall. Your feedback will be incredibly valuable to us to shape up the future of PVP in this game.
So enough about taking out other players, let’s check out how After the Fall controls on PlayStation VR to take out your enemies of both the alive and undead kind!
On PlayStation we support the PS VR Aim controller, DualShock 4 controller, and dual PlayStation Move controllers! We wanted to make sure the game is accessible as possible and support anyone’s preferred playstyle. Have a look at the control schemes:
Future updates of After the Fall will certainly involve PS5 in some form but it’s too early for us to share anything about that at this time.
With intense 4-player co-op at its core, players join forces with other survivors across all major VR platforms as they venture out into enemy territory and take on huge hordes of snowbreed. Watch out for the more twisted types; from towering brutes that can instantly flatten you with a strike of their huge ice fist to decapitators that will grab you by the neck to pull you off the ground. No mission will play the same twice and taking on the snowbreed is a team effort as players will need to work together to survive the cold and hostile world of After the Fall.
You, the player, are a Harvest Runner, one of the few who are courageous enough to venture out into the cold. With your squad of fellow Runners you’ll jump into the containment sites that are filled to the brim with Snowbreed. People in the various settlements in LA rely on you to enter these monster infested zones in order to bring in the resources required to keep the lights on back at the Line. In return, you are rewarded with bigger and better guns to go back in for this satisfying loop of taking out Snowbreed. It’s not an easy job, and only Harvest Runners can tackle the different dangers that these Snowbreed embody.
In After the Fall, it is all about knowing your enemies and working together with your team in order to survive. Your next best friend is your large arsenal of weapons. This consists of a variety of handguns, shotguns, rifles and more, and as you get more experienced as a Runner, higher quality variations will become available to you. It is up to you to use these weapons wisely. Only one thing is certain; whether you rush to the frontlines with your custom handgun ready, or stay back with your hunting rifle and explosives, do not run out of ammo!
You’ll get to craft weapons while engaging in the game’s high-paced combat using real-life movements. Customizing weapons and gear requires resources and floppy disk blueprints found throughout the city, so you’ll have to scavenge the remains of civilization in order to stay ahead of your enemies.
In your fight for survival you’ll wield a wide variety of weapons. Will you rush to the frontlines with your electrified knuckleduster and custom handgun ready to take down hordes of Snowbreed? Or would you rather stay back and use your hunting rifle with explosive ammo to take down the hulking brutes? It’s up to you.
On top of this, you’ll be able to unleash devastating attacks using crafted devices, such as a volley of missiles from a wrist-mounted ’80s walkman-turned-rocket launcher. Crafting and customizing weapons and gear requires resources and blueprints found throughout the world, which you’ll take back with you to the basecamp for use.
Speaking of basecamp; this is a shared hub where you’ll run into other players from all over the world, hang out and interact with them in VR, form a party of up to four players to go on a new mission, and more. But you can also decide to play the game by yourself – the difficulty will scale accordingly. Though I personally feel playing with friends is more fun, especially in VR!
