As WP's managing editor, I edit review and preview articles, attempt to keep up with the frantic pace of Rainier's news posts, and keep our reviewers on deadline, which is akin to herding cats. When I have a moment to myself and don't have my nose in a book, I like to play action/RPG, adventure and platforming games.

8. 'Ori and the Will of the Wisps' (XOne/PC)

by Judy on Jan. 27, 2019 @ 12:00 a.m. PST

Embark on an all-new adventure to discover the mysteries beyond the forest of Nibel, uncover the hidden truths of those lost, and unravel Ori's true destiny.

Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: The sequel to the wonderfully beautiful Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and the Will of the Wisps puts players back in the shoes of the adorable moppet Ori as it once again sets out on a dangerous adventure. With stunning visuals and what looks to be the same top-notch gameplay as the original game, Ori and the Will of the Wisps should scratch the itch of anyone looking for a Metroidvania title in 2019.

Cody Medellin: We don't know too much about any new features this sequel will bring, but that's fine. After all, the original title was a beautiful game in the Metroidvania vein that was awe-inspiring and heartbreaking. The title was revealed two years ago, so we're just hoping that the release year of 2019 will stick.

Rhi Mitera: I'm admittedly bad at platformer games, but it's worth the struggle since Ori and the Blind Forest is one of the most hauntingly beautiful games I've ever seen. I look forward to spending more time in Ori's world in Will of the Wisps.

Adam Pavlacka: Ori and the Blind Forest was a surprise hit for the Xbox One. A debut title from a brand-new indie developer, the game mixed hardcore platforming (I'm not kidding here, some of the sequences were brutally precise) with flowing visuals that looked as though they were right out of a painting. The E3 2018 demo for Will of the Wisps showed off a game that was just as stunning, but the developers have said it'll be a tad bit more forgiving than the original. Really, Moon Studios doesn't have to do better than Ori and the Blind Forest. If the sophomore title can match the quality of the first, it'll be a must-own game.

David Silbert: Last year saw the release of plenty of phenomenal Metroidvania titles, from Hollow Knight and Yoku's Island Express to Dead Cells and Guacamelee! 2. Despite the plethora of Metroidvanias available, however, few can compare to 2015's Ori and the Blind Forest. Beautiful and serene, yet challenging and often brutally difficult, Ori and the Blind Forest was a particular bright spot in Microsoft's slim lineup of first-party Xbox One titles. With Ori and the Will of the Wisps set to launch later this year, hopefully Microsoft and developer Moon Studios can make lightning strike again for this whimsical, endearing series.
