Legend's plans for Unreal 2's MPX multiplayer were a brilliant idea, but before the team had even begun working on the multiplayer code and maps, that part of the game had already grown into what could have been an 18-month project for the entire team on its own. We'd love to have seen Unreal 2's multiplayer vision carried through to completion, but it turned out to be unrealistic to try to develop such a huge single-player game with such a huge multiplayer component. That's why the decision was made, and it was by mutual agreement and discussion between Legend, Epic, and Infogrames. Nobody was forced. And it wasn't about boosting UT2 at U2's expense. Unreal 2's MPX would have complemented rather than competed with Unreal Tournament 2's more traditional UT-style game types. On top of all this mumbo jumbo on Monday Infogrames will announce that it will be changing the name of Epic Games' and Legend Ent.'s forthcoming first-person shooter from Unreal II to Unreal Episode II. Likewise, Unreal Tournament 2 from Epic and Digital Extremes will carry the new Unreal Tournament 2003 moniker. The changes are probably meant to curb confusion over the differences between these two games, as well as to further differentiate them from future products like Unreal Championship for the Xbox.

Unreal Engine build 829 was recently released to licensees. This was a major update that included a lot of performance and feature improvements. Head over to the official site for full article with all facts.

Highly-respected German developer Westka Interactive has spread word they are working on a new exciting game (no working title known as of yet). The product is a first-person action/adventure PC game, which utilises the latest Unreal engine. It is scheduled for release in 2003. More info soon!

The official site for Unreal 2 has today been updated with a new screenshot and there is also a update in their download section with a nasty new wallpaper.

GameSpot sits down and talk to Digital Extremes lead designer Pancho Eekels about Unreal Tournament II, "the recently confirmed first-person shooter".

Pancho Eekels: Unreal II is a single-player-focused mission-based game and has lots of story and background, tasks, and events, as well as a bit more action than the original. Unreal Tournament 2 is a sequel to the original multiplayer-focused action-packed game for the PC. Unreal Championship for Xbox is similar to Unreal Tournament 2 in the multiplayer focus and action but incorporates the element of console play into an FPS that many have not been able to do yet.

Seven new movies in DivX AVI format is now available which show the Infogrames press event where Unreal Tournament II was unveiled to the press. The movies offer plenty of ShakyCam footage shot off computer monitors that illustrate various new features and aspects of the game's design along with gameplay action, as well as a few bits on Unreal II and Unreal Championship. There is a lot of Unreal storys today and this time Computer and Video Games has updated there site with a new 9.7 Mb movie from the X-Box version of Unreal Championship. Bring me there.

A French gaming magazine by the name of Joystick has featured Unreal Tournament 2 in the January issue of their magazine. The facts come from a hands on account of playing UT2, so you can be certain that this game is not a simple rumor. PlanetUnreal got the full scoop, check it out!
