Unashamedly British in humor, RuneScape embraces an unconventional world where you're free to play and explore the way you want to. An MMO unlike any other - become the hero you were born to be...
RuneScape has today opened a door to the Dimension of the Damned, a brand-new, survive-at-all-cost, PvE competitive gaming experience. Available for 10 days only, Dimension of the Damned sees players thrown into an alternate undead dimension where the dead are rising in droves.
In this parallel RuneScape universe, zombies are spawning everywhere and players must scramble for resources against the bloodthirsty hordes baying for their blood. Players must get their score as high as possible over a one-hour session and can attempt multiple sessions, but only their best will be considered for their entry to the final showdown. Taking place on October 28th, the highest scoring 1,000 players will compete in a last-person-standing, 90-minute endgame to be crowned King or Queen of the Damned.
RuneFest, the world's biggest celebration of the RuneScape franchise returned to Birmingham this weekend with a schedule packed full of exciting announcements and premiere reveals of brand-new content coming to RuneScape.
Jagex unveiled plans to expand RuneScape beyond games, partnering with creator and internet phenomenon, Charlie White aka MoistCr1TiKaL as well as acclaimed LA Based production business Lyrical Media, to bring the world, characters and stories of Gielinor to life in a new exciting animated adaption.
RuneScape
- 25 years in the making, RuneScape Reignited launches December 2, marking a defining moment for the game — inviting players old and new to return together, rediscover RuneScape and experience it as it was always meant to be. Through the Remastered Journey and Adventure Guide, alongside a fresh economy, brand-new hi scores and a focus on player first. Reignited gives players the ultimate RuneScape experience.
- Players can get full Reignited Access without membership from 2 December to 12 December.
- The long-awaited Plugin API is launching in October, with players getting an early hands-on ahead of official release.
- 2027 content will unfolds in three landmark story arcs, all of which tie into long-running storylines — Hoard of Dragons (kicking off January) offers a sequel to the popular Dragon Slayer quest, City of Gnomes continues the gnome storyline, first stated in 2002 and Secrets of Karamja which introduces a new end game raid. These arcs weave together RuneScape's 2027 content into three distinct story narratives and also include an Agility skill rework, new skilling and solo bosses, new area expansions and a new Grandmaster Quest!
Remastering the Journey
RuneScape should be a game that feels immersive, modern and accessible. It should be a game with heart, iconic stories and areas. Your journey through it matters and you every step of that journey should feel as important as the long term aspiration at the end of it.
But we also know that some parts of the game aren't always able to live up to that vision. That's why we're planning to remaster the whole play journey in 2027, with the first update, Remastering the early player journey, dropping on December 2nd.
Remastering can mean so much more than just improving something on a visual level. It also means considering how players engage with all aspects of the game and modernising those interactions in a multitude of ways. We want to make those first few weeks of a new RuneScape character feel exactly like what you should be able to expect from the game as a whole. Not just a game that is visually beautiful, but one where quests, skills and menus feel good and are fun and rewarding to engage with.
From Tutorial Island through to Seers Village, Camelot and Elvargs lair, we've been working on environmental remasters, but there is so much more that will be arriving as part of this update!
We're looking over many early quests to ensure that they can stand up today's standards, while making sure that the bosses in some of those quests also feel like actual boss encounters...complete with mechanics and healthbars! Think Demon Slayer, Vampyre Slayer and Dragon Slayer.
Beyond environment and questing it would be remiss of us not to consider the gameplay improvements that the early game is in desperate need of. We want to make core skill interactions easier to understand while also reviewing the skill guides to ensure they're up to scratch. We also want to make sure that the pacing here feels good across skills in those early levels!
The bloat of configuring settings and addressing dated UI and clutter are another couple of important areas where we know that RuneScape can be better. We want to really look at the top level UI and declutter it to make the game more inviting to new players taking their first steps in our world. That means making it easier to navigate through menus in general and surfacing the right settings during the early player journey. We're also reviewing what the defaults should actually be and are clearing up any where a huge majority of the playerbase doesn't actually use them (urns auto-teleporting may be one such example).
What we've mentioned today barely scratches the surface and there's still so much more to show about this update. We'll be sharing a more in-depth preview of the Remastered Journey before the update launches on December 2nd. Stay tuned for more news in the weeks ahead!
As exciting as remastering so many aspects of the game is, it is also only the starting point of a whole host of incredible changes and new features coming to RuneScape....
The Adventure Guide
"What should I do now?"
We've all been there. You take a short (or longer!) break from RuneScape and come back... only to realize that you have no idea what you were doing when you last played. The experience is even more confusing for new players who have even less context as to what the world of Gielinor offers, where they can go and what they should do (first and then second and then third...). This is a challenge that any game can face, but especially one with 25 years of storied history...!
RuneScape can also be tricky in that players may not just be unsure about what to do, but may also feel blocked by not actually understanding what certain features, systems, quests or areas are, where to access them and how they work.
The Adventure Guide will remedy that confusion, but it will go even further than that! We envision that anyone who uses this guide will find the best and most fun parts of RuneScape easier and without having to reach for a lengthy wiki page just to get going.
It's entirely optional, but it provides a recommended golden path through the best of what RuneScape has to offer! The beauty and magic of RuneScape is its breadth and the freedom it offers to go anywhere and do anything. The Adventure Guide isn't here to challenge any of that. Rather, it provides a gentle structure of what we feel the best adventures and activities to engage in are, all while leaving it up to player choice to veer from the beaten path, get lost and really see just how much RuneScape has to offer. And if you ever find yourself starting to lose momentum or being unsure of what to try next... the Adventure Guide will be there for you, ready to be picked up wherever you are in your journey.
You can use it for as much or as little guidance as you personally need, and it can help direct you to aspects and areas of the game that you may not be familiar with yet.
Most importantly, the Adventure Guide is there to cater to everyone in RuneScape, from newbie through to end-game player. It isn't just a series of beginner steps intended to serve as a tutorial path for new players. It's a companion, ever optional but always useful, that is intended to support your journey throughout your time in Gielinor.
We'll be sharing a more fuller preview of the Adventure Guide in the next few months and ahead of its release on December 2nd. Keep an eye out for our Month Aheads to see when we might be revealing more!
2027 Roadmap
2027 is one of our most ambitious years ever, and our plans for it are packed to the rafters with updates, content, continued restoration work and overhauls.
We’re reaffirming our promise to bring the heart back to RuneScape.
This is about bringing you more of the game you love, with meaningful updates again and again. Aside from the content updates (which we'll get to in a moment), we are continuing our Road to Restoration into 2027! You can look forward to:
- A unified collection log
- Grouping System Rework
- A long awaited clan finder and general improvements
- A Quest Timeline Rework
- Frequent rebalances
- Frequent clean-up updates
- More Remastered Journey Updates
On top of that, there are plenty of places where we will be addressing those quibbles that keep getting in the way of you just getting on with the game. To name just a few, we'll be tackling:
- Clickbox Issues
- The Camera being Forcefully Rotated or moved in undesired ways
- World server performance, so that you no longer have to question whether your world is laggy because it has too many other players on it
- Your character stopping its movement just because you've interacted with items in your inventory
AND the return of the ninja team who will be entirely focused on the road to restoration and taking the time for those smaller miscellaneous requests that can make all the difference.
Even considering the above, however, the most important change coming to RuneScape in 2027 is the introduction of Arcs. These provide the structure for around four months worth of content and what's in each individual Arc will be connected to a wider world narrative that is unique to that same Arc and which unfolds around it all. So everything will feel cohesive within the Arc theme, but will not necessarily need to be led by a singular quest line.
There will be three distinct story arcs that each focus on separate stories. And each arc will pull together a range of content for all player-types into one single narrative that is bespoke to the arc.
This will allow us to tap into a range of different places, stories and characters (including some you've haven't seen in a long time!) throughout each year while keeping things feeling fresh and cohesive. We want each arc to be something that you will remember for years to come.
We want Gielinor itself to evolve as big moments unfold. We want you to feel part of a living, breathing world where its inhabitants react to events happening and where content releases align with the current murmurings of the world.
Arc one will kick off in January, but we’re already giving you a sneak peak into each of these first three arcs today...
Let's get into it!
Arcs
The First Arc - Hoard of Dragons
The First Arc - Quests
We're kicking 2027 off in epic fashion!
By returning to RuneScape's most iconic quest...
For many of us, the Dragon Slayer quest captured the purest feeling of childhood adventure.
Piecing together a mysterious map. Rebuilding a ship. Sailing towards an island we had only ever heard about in whispers.
And then, deep beneath Crandor, standing before Elvarg, antidragon shield in hand, determined, yet completely spellbound.
When she finally fell, it felt like we had achieved the impossible.
We weren’t just adventurers anymore.
We were Dragon Slayers.
But now, something far greater has awakened.
After centuries of slumber, a gilded dragon has emerged, devastating towns, destroying settlements and leaving a trail of dragonfire across Gielinor...
Welcome to Dragon Isle
At the heart of the island stands the ruin of an ancient stronghold, once home to a long-lost order whose purpose has been forgotten. Its walls have not simply crumbled, they’ve been torn apart by the passage of something enormous.
And deep beneath the ruins lies a dragon nest, where the true scale of the threat will finally be revealed. To understand what happened here, you’ll also need answers from the man who first sent you to face Elvarg. How did Oziach know so much about the dragon beneath Crandor? What connects him to this forgotten order? And what has he been preparing us for all these years?
In Dragon Slayer II, we’ll finally begin to uncover the truth behind Oziach’s mysterious past.
But Dragon Isle is more than the setting for a quest. It’s a new area filled with dangerous and rewarding ways to interact with its draconic inhabitants.
Put your Thieving skills to the test by stealing eggs from beneath watchful claws. Use Firemaking to hatch dragon eggs. Hunt gilded dragons for their precious scales, then use them to reforge and transform armour.
As you explore, you’ll also discover seals, granting access to hidden vaults. Conquer them all, and you’ll earn the opportunity to enter the island’s grand treasure room...
But beneath Dragon Isle, something is waiting.
A gilded terror has awoken.
An ancient stronghold, torn apart.
The Lady Lumbridge sails again.
Dragon Slayer II is coming.
The First Arc - Clues Expansion
Grandmaster Clue Scrolls and the Clue Expansion Update
Grandmaster Clue Scrolls are coming to Runescape as part of the Clue Expansion update in early 2027!
The ultimate test for clue hunters, and our most demanding clue tier yet. Uri has been getting up to his usual shenanigans and reclaimed a mysterious Dragon's dungeon, full of riches.
Enter only if you dare... to take on this challenge. Each step you solve will unravel more of the dungeon, as you unlock your way to exquisite treasures.
Take down tough bosses, face timed challenges, take part in some high level skilling, and hop your way around Gielinor travelling far and wide to complete Uri's Trials.
A Grandmaster tier is, of course, worthy of grand rewards.
New Rewards
A Grandmaster tier is worthy of grand rewards, and no new clue update would be complete without a fancy new dye!
Introducing the Gilded Dye which you can use to recolour your favourite armours and weapons!
But why introduce just one new dye, when we can bring back the discontinued dyes from the bygone days of Treasure Hunter too... Aurora and Soul? More on that in future...
We're not stopping there though, as this year's Player-Owned House rework has given us a great opportunity to offer new rewards for a variety of activities.
You can uncover plans for brand new furniture, including Penguin and Polar tech devices to aid your clue hunting.
Such as the Mk. 007 GPR (That stands for Ground Penetrating Radar), or the Polartech Locator for Agent Surveillance, Mapping & Acquisition Device A.K.A... the P.L.A.S.M.A Device. This device will allow you to spy a brand-new Special Agent penguin, Agent #008.... who gives you a better chance at a higher tier casket, and a chance of obtaining sealed Grandmaster clues. You can expect some brand-new cosmetic furniture too, such as an exquisite Dye Fountain. This one will set you back a pretty penny!
A few years ago you may recall that we saw some lovely designs submitted by you for new activity pets. We know many of you were sad to see a certain little meerkat friend just miss out to Artemis.
We're very excited to reveal today that Meek is finally making its way into the game! Grab some more dyes because you’ll need them to recolour this cute lil’ fella.
Making Clues more accessible
Grandmaster clues will naturally be the most sought after by our expert clue solving community, but this is an update intended for everyone, whether you're already an experienced hand at clues or have yet to crack open your first sealed clue.
We know it can be a bit tricky to start getting into clues, and things like the Globetrotter outfit become a real hurdle to enjoying them.
We want to make it easier for everyone to jump in and have fun trailing treasures.
With that in mind, this update will include a range of improvements aimed at making Treasure Trails far more approachable and easier to get into. We'll also be releasing a brand new short, introductory quest where you'll be helping out Zaida as she shows you the ropes on solving clues.
The First Arc - Agility Rework
One of the most requested changes is finally coming to RuneScape... the Agility skill is being reworked as part of 2027's first arc!
Gielinor is a BIG place, and we travel across it in many ways. Running. Teleporting. Surging one-tile into a wall... But it was actually the Agility skill that was always meant to define movement. And it's time it fully lived up to its name.
Agility can be so much more than the lacklustre support skill it is today. It should transform how you traverse the world.
So, we're exploring ways to make run energy more interesting and meaningful. Surge, Dive and Escape will be properly integrated. There may even be a brand-new movement ability joining them!
Agility training will also receive a much-needed overhaul. Agility courses will be revamped and be made to feel fresh, but familiar. We want to give you meaningful options between mastering the quickest routes to maximize your XP rates or exploring new, slower and less active ways to train.
The choice is yours.
The First Arc - Recap
The first arc kicks off in early 2027 and will introduce the Dragon Slayer II quest, alongside a clue expansion update and a much needed Agility rework amongst other things.
But this is also only the first of three arcs that you can look forward to in 2027. Let's have a look at the following arcs...
The Second Arc - The City of Gnomes
The second arc, The City of Gnomes, will be released in the summer of 2027 following the conclusion of Hoard of Dragons, our first arc.
The Second Arc - Quests
Our next grandmaster quest, The Curse of Arposandra, is coming!
In the second arc of 2027, it's finally time (after fifteen years!) to uncover the lost city of the gnomes, unpick its secrets, and confront the master of illusion himself, Glouphrie the untrusted.
Glouphrie has been a thorn in the gnomes’ side for a long while now. Way back in the fourth age he was banished by his own kind, and ever since then he’s been plotting his return.
Deep in the mountains of Kandarin, far away from home, he founded Arposandra.
Some say Arposandra is a haven. A utopia, built by gnomes, for gnomes, safe from the threat of human incursion.
Others say it is a dark and dangerous place, churning out toxic waste and mutated monsters. Those who venture in never come back.
In "The Curse of Arposandra" you will uncover its mysteries for yourself. Who is living here? Why has it been hidden for so long, and how? What’s going on with the talking terrorbirds, the toxic waste? What is Glouphrie planning - and how can you stop it before it’s too late?
This will be a true grandmaster quest. A real test of your skills and courage. A finale fit for one of our longest-running questlines.
And as a reward? Among other things - the entirety of the city of Arposandra itself.
Arposandra will be packed to the rafters with new skilling activities, combat encounters, mysteries, characters, and achievements. There will be plenty to explore long after the story has concluded.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. This city is closely guarded...
The Second Arc - Boss - Glouphrie the Untrusted
You'll first do battle with Glouphrie during the Curse of Arposandra and he won't be pulling any punches.
Glouphrie the Untrusted is a new solo boss arriving during the City of Gnomes Arc and is the master of illusion magic. He's had a very long time to perfect his art and you are standing in the way of his plans.
He won’t let you trust what you see.
You’ll need to stay sharp. Keep your wits about you. Break through the tricks and the lies.
Or else Arposandra will be your tomb.
The Second Arc - Community Skilling Boss - Argento's Nightmare
In life, Argento was the greatest of the spirit trees, the oldest of the Old Ones. He was a friend to Hazelmere, survivor of the God Wars, and even a confidant of Guthix himself.
As with all good things, this could not last forever. And on one fateful day, Gielinor itself cried out in pain, as Argento was reduced to a sacred silver stump.
But a being of such power is hard to fully erase, for his roots reach deep into the anima of Gielinor...
Argento's Nightmare is RuneScape's first community skilling boss. This means that this boss will be a one-per-world boss as well as being "always-on" (barring their short respawn timer) and non-instanced. In other words, you can show up and join in with everyone else whenever you'd like to. No group needed!
Delving into the Spirit Tree Realm, you'll work together to free Argento from his nightmares - a violent gnomish hellscape, driven by Glouphrie's targeted corruption from the Poison Wastes.
This skilling boss will offer new ways of training your Woodcutting, Firemaking, Divination, and Farming skills. Use these skills to purge Argento's realm of pollution, restoring him back to a state of eternal dreams, where he can rest once more.
The Second Arc - Remastering
As mentioned above, it's been 15 years since we last visited the gnomes and they could certainly do with a fair amount of TLC and revamping.
All six of the existing gnome quests will be remastered, alongside graphical updates for the gnomes themselves, the Tree Gnome Stronghold, and the Tree Gnome Village. This will be bundled with new post-quest content for those of you who have already experienced the gnome storyline up to this point.
The Second Arc - Recap
The Curse of Arposandra grandmaster quest, the city of Asposandra itself, the Glouphrie the Untrusted boss, and the Argento’s Nightmare community skilling boss will all be released next summer as part of arc two: The City of Gnomes.
The Third Arc - Secrets of Karamja
In the third arc of 2027, you'll join the Archaeology Guild on a treacherous expedition into the heart of the Karamjan jungle, searching for an entrance to the hidden depths of the Temple of Ah Za Rhoon!
The Third Arc - A New Raid
You've been here before during the Shilo Village Quest, so you would be forgiven for thinking you're safe. This is familiar territory, after all.
But there is a lot more to this temple than you thought...
The witch Queen Rashiliyia reawakens from her slumber and suddenly, you find yourself deep underground... and you are no longer alone.
You'll have to fight to keep your ragtag team of archaeologists alive, as a dark power stirs at the heart of the temple. Nobody knows what horrors lurk within, only that those dragged to its depths are never seen again.
Thus begins our brand new raid, which reinvents precisely what a raid in RuneScape can be: The Temple of Ah Za Rhoon!
Descend through a labyrinth of roots and stone, fighting through Rashiliya's undead horde and several powerful bosses, culminating in a grand battle with the Witch Queen herself.
You will lay bare the imposing, ancient ruins of this city of the Dead and as you go deeper you'll find that its blood-drenched history of Zamorak worship isn't as long forgotten as you might think.
While you uncover the ancient history of Karamja, you'll also learn more about the history of the archaeology guild itself. Including Acting Guildmaster Reiniger's ties to a secret, shadowy organisation...
This will be a part of Karamja that you have never seen before, and we'll be expanding on its lore, culture and visual identity and giving it the love and care it deserves.
The Third Arc - More still to revealed
This is only a first glimpse at some of the content that will be coming as part of this arc. We will be revealing more about the content and stories tied to the 'Secrets of Karamja' arc later next year.
RS Plugins Beta - Revealed and Launch date announce for October
Announced earlier this year in January as a major part of our 2026 Roadmap, the API Project is on course to bring Plugins to RuneScape.
Plugins are tools created by community developers that can shape your gameplay experience in all sorts of ways. If you’ve played Old School RuneScape, you might already be familiar with what they can offer. Quest Helper, for example, is a popular plugin that guides you through quests, while others offer more bespoke experiences designed around the community and content creation!
We know just how important this update is to so many of you, and we’ve been listening closely to your feedback. In fact, plenty of you have told us that Plugins are the one thing that would bring you back to RuneScape.
Well… we have some news.
It’s time to come back.
For the past few months, we’ve been working behind the scenes with some of the most talented developers in our community to create something special... We're delighted to announce that plugins are coming to RuneScape this October and it all starts with the RS Plugin Beta on October 6th!
Look out for our dedicated blog then, but if you're at RuneFest this weekend, make sure you visit the LAN area to give the plugins a go!
For this initial playtest, we’ve selected five plugins. Starting with a limited selection of plugins allows the team to ensure everything is running smoothly before we add more on top of the system.
We’ve prioritised the ones that matter most to you. Yes, that means Quest Helper made it onto the list!
The five plugins that are part of the Beta will be:
- Quest Helper (62 Quests) - created by Zoinkwiz, Techpure and JosTheFarmer
- Menu Entry Swapper - created by SereSelene
- Tilemarkers - created by J3
- Entity Hider - created by Rcm37
- Job Gauges - created by Nyu
How to access Plugins
We'll share more details on Tuesday on how exactly to enter the Beta test worlds, but we've today laid out below how plugins will be integrated into the game,
You can access the RS Plugin Hub in-game through the Ribbon menu, in the bottom right corner of your screen. Look out for the icon that represents a toolbox!
From there, you can browse and install available plugins, manage or uninstall the ones you’re already using, and report any issues directly through the Hub.
Classic interface mode
The toolbox will be on your ribbon by default
Modern interface mode
If you're using the default ribbon (the one that just shows parent windows), you can access the toolbox by hovering over the Settings button.
If you are using the custom ribbon (where you can choose what is displayed), it will place it at the end of the ribbon for you, if there is space to do so. If you don't have space, simply edit the ribbon to add it.
Once you've installed a plugin, you'll also need to enable it within the "Manage" tab of Plugin Hub.
Optionally, those of you who try this out at RuneFest can complete a quick survey after the playtest, which will really help us and the community developers understand how you get on with them.
Your feedback is crucial to us. Whether you want to report a bug or request a plugin directly to our group of community developers, please get involved. Your feedback will help us identify bugs, iron out any issues and continue improving the plugin experience throughout the Beta. Many of our community developers will be there this weekend, and they’ve put an enormous amount of their own time into making this launch possible, so be sure to pass on your thanks if you see them!
That's it for todays RuneFest Roundup, but don't forget that we closed out todays show with the huge news of RuneScape Reignited and we have an entire blog dedicated to the announcement of that right here - be sure to join our Reddit and Discord community discussions and let us know what you're most excited about!
