8. 'Shadow of the Tomb Raider' (PS4/XOne/PC)

by Judy on Jan. 31, 2018 @ 12:00 a.m. PST

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Lara must master a deadly jungle, overcome terrifying tombs, and persevere through her darkest hour.

Tony "OUberLord" Mitera: I continue to be impressed with how good the recent Tomb Raider games have been. For the first game, the developer could've trotted out another entry in the franchise and called it a day, but I'm not sure anyone expected it to be quite that amazing. Then the second game came along and ended up being incrementally better, when I would've been happy with more of the same. Stalking around an unforgiving wilderness in a snowstorm while simultaneously hunting and being hunted by armed men was amazingly fun, and the environments that Lara had to navigate were magnificent. The third game of the new series is likely a lock as yet another great game — and that's assuming the development team hasn't somehow managed to make it even better.

Adam Pavlacka: I was skeptical of Square's Tomb Raider reboot, yet the company has done right by the franchise. Rise of the Tomb Raider offered a deep open-world experience, along with traditional tomb-raiding puzzles in the form of challenge tombs. While the latter weren't quite as deep as they could have been, the overall package was worth it. Not much is known about Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but rumors that Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal is the driving force behind Lara Croft's next adventure is reason enough to be excited. Nobody asked for this pairing, but it just seems right.

David Silbert: Shadow of the Tomb Raider may not have been officially announced, but we know it's coming. If an unfortunate leak on a Montreal subway car didn't convince fans, then the subsequent confirmation by the Tomb Raider Twitter account did. Details are still scarce, other than that Crystal Dynamics is calling it "Lara Croft's defining adventure" and that a "major event" is coming in 2018. Whatever lies in store, fans have plenty to be excited about. The Tomb Raider reboot has produced two successful entries up to this point, and there's no reason to believe the magic will end with lucky number three.

Thomas Wilde: I'm a lot more fond of the new Lara than the old one, and I'm interested in seeing her further adventures of exploration and PTSD.
