id Software Confirms It Is No Longer An ESA Member

One of the few remaining E3 holdouts is id Software, as it first confirmed its attendance, but then retracted the statement. According to Gamepolitics, the DOOM developer is no longer a member of ESA, making it the third big company to recently leave. Similar to Vivendi/Activision and LucasArts, id Software gave no specifics as to why it decided to leave, but the word is that current ESA President Michael Gallagher is partly to blame, as is a $5 million cancellation fee when E3 moved from LA to Santa Monica last year, which made their ESA membership fee jump from $1 million to $4.5 million.

Valve's WWII online FPS Day Of Defeat is getting a new "beta" update adding support for Steamworks which not only adds 51 achievements, player avatar display in the scoreboard and win panel, but also detailed player statistics integrated with the Steam Community features, a new map (dod_Palermom remake of community map dod_salerno), nemesis/revenge freeze cam and new effects driven by the particle system introduced to the Source engine for Team Fortress 2.

Left 4 Dead, developed by Counter-Strike makers Turtle Rock Studios, is a co-operative multiplayer action game, using the Source Engine, and also introducing Turtle Rock's v2.0 A.I. technology. Originally slated for late 2007, delayed until Q1 2008, then rescheduled for Aug./Sept., in a recent interview Valve's Doug Lombardi revealed that while the game is basically complete it will now launch simultaneously on Xbox 360 and PC in November 2008.
