'StarCraft II' Celebrates 8th Anniversary With Freebie, XP Boost

by Rainier on July 25, 2018 @ 2:54 p.m. PDT

Designed to be the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game, StarCraft II will feature the return of the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg races, overhauled and re-imagined with Blizzard's signature approach to game balance. Each race will be further distinguished from the others, with several new units and new gameplay mechanics, as well as new abilities for some of the classic StarCraft units that will be making a reappearance in the game.

Sporting a vibrant 3D-graphics engine, StarCraft II will once again center on the clash between the protoss, terrans, and zerg, with each side deploying legions of veteran, upgraded, and new unit types. Unparalleled online play for StarCraft II will be available through a new version of Battle.net, Blizzard Entertainment's world-renowned gaming service. Battle.net has been redesigned from the ground up to be the premier online gaming destination for Blizzard gamers, with several enhancements and new features, such as voice communication, cloud file storage, leagues and ladders, achievements, stat-tracking, and more.

The solo campaign for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will continue the epic saga where it left off in StarCraft: Brood War. The story line chronicles the exploits of marshal-turned-rebel-leader Jim Raynor and features both familiar faces and new heroes. Players will be able to tailor the experience, choosing their own mission path and selecting technology and research upgrades to suit their playing style throughout the 29-mission campaign. Several challenge-mode mini-games will also be included, with focused goals designed to ease players into the basics of multiplayer strategies.

To honor eight years of unforgettable esports moments and epic gameplay, beginning July 23rd and running through July 30th, players who play one game will receive a sweet cake portrait.

StarCraft II demands a lot of brainpower so enjoy some sugar while earning ladder points.

In-game, the workers are joining in on the celebration, but instead of wearing hats or stuffing their bodies with glitter, they will proudly fly banners and launch fireworks every time they complete a base structure. Party supply rental fees are costly in the future, however, so the signs will come down after some time.

But that’s not all we’re doing!

As a thank you to the StarCraft II community for their passion, we’re also activating a 100% bonus to the base experience gained in Co-op Commanders and for leveling up individual races in Versus. This bonus will be available July 23rd – July 30th as well so why not celebrate the StarCraft II’s 8th anniversary by maxing out your Commanders and leveling your races.

Features:

  • Fast-paced, hard-hitting, tightly balanced competitive real-time strategy gameplay that recaptures and improves on the magic of the original game
