PlanetSide Arena Dev Diary Tells Us More About The Different Vehicles & Weapons

by Rainier on Jan. 9, 2019 @ 11:43 a.m. PST

PlanetSide Arena is a new massive Sci-fi arena shooter to feature match-based PvP combat, class-based gameplay and unique seasonal progression mechanics.

Featuring a robust class system, combined arms gameplay, and dynamic in-match and seasonal progression, PlanetSide Arena brings the franchise’s signature epic-scale, all-out FPS action to new massive arena game modes capable of supporting up to 1,000 players per match.

Played solo, in teams of three, or as part of large combat groups, players will begin every match by selecting from one of three initial character classes – Assault, Engineer, and Medic – before deploying via drop pod into a massive map dynamically tailored for each game mode. Each class comes equipped with a jetpack, personal vehicle, and unique abilities which can be upgraded throughout a match, offering a layer of strategy to team construction and combat.

Diverse vehicle selection, a broad arsenal of sci-fi weaponry, and fast-paced movement mechanics combine to create an intense, competitive and unparalleled sci-fi action shooter experience. Weapons and upgrades can be acquired through pick-ups and terminals using in-match currency, while unlocking new Battle Pass levels rewards players with powerful weapons blueprints and character/vehicle cosmetics for max customization.

PlanetSide Arena initially launches with three major game modes: Massive Clash, an epic 500-player Group vs. Group experience, along with Solo and Team Battle Royale modes. New modes like Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy, and Global Conquest will be introduced each new game season.

PlanetSide Arena also debuts an all-new seasonal story arc that will introduce major new content into the game as the development team builds towards the next iteration of the franchise.

In this week’s “Inside the Arena” dev video series, Senior Artist Chris Bishop and Senior Game Designer Troy Schram showcase the various weapons available for pick-up and upgrades in PlanetSide Arena and discuss the importance of mobility and the roles vehicles play in the game.

Key Features:

  • MASSIVE SCALE: Solo, Small Team, and Large Group Arena-style game modes capable of supporting up to 1,000 players per match offer a variety and scale of carnage unrivalled by any other sci-fi multiplayer shooter.
  • UNIQUE CLASSES: PlanetSide Arena launches with three initial classes — Assault, Engineer, and Medic — each with their own unique abilities, utilities, and play styles.
  • COMBINED ARMS: A broad selection of sci-fi vehicles – hover bikes, jetpacks, quads and tanks – expands upon traditional infantry warfare, offering players and teams the ability to quickly navigate the map, power-up, and tactically approach combat situations.
  • ARENA GAMES: Launching initially with Battle Royale and Massive Clash – a 500-player GvG mode -- PlanetSide Arena will expand the PlanetSide franchise to include a wide array of new match-based game modes: Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy, Global Conquest, and more.
  • IN AND OUT-OF-MATCH PROGRESSION: Power progression plays a huge role in PlanetSide Arena, as players can acquire more powerful weapons and attachments through pick-ups and terminals with in-match currency. PlanetSide Arena also offers meaningful out-of-match seasonal progression; build your class by unlocking powerful new weapon blueprints!
  • SEASONAL STORY ARC: PlanetSide Arena bridges the past, present and future of PlanetSide with an all-new story arc that will introduce major new content each new game season.

In addition to the upcoming launch of PlanetSide Arena, Daybreak Games remains fully committed to providing active development support for PlanetSide 2, which recently announced engine technology improvements and a new robotic faction as part of its sixth anniversary game update. The next major update for PlanetSide 2 will introduce Oshur, the first new continent in five years, when released in 2019.

PlanetSide Arena is now available for pre-order on Steam.  The Sanctuary Assault Edition (SRP $19.99) includes the Season 1 Battle Pass and the Assault Armor set.  The Legendary Edition (SRP $39.99) is packed with Season 1 Battle Pass, three Class Armor sets (Engineer, Assault and Medic), and the M-20 Tempest (hoverbike) Pack.  Each pre-order grants players Closed Beta access.  In addition, Daybreak will also be offering Closed Beta access to the game to some of their most loyal and active PlanetSide 2 players.

PlanetSide Arena is set to release on PC (Steam) on January 29, 2019.
