'The Captain is Dead' Recruits Stanley Parable Narrator, Demo Available - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on June 16, 2020 @ 7:02 p.m. PDT

Based on the frantic and fun board game, The Captain is Dead puts you in charge of crew members on a besieged starship. You must co-ordinate the crew to repair critical systems and fend off hostile aliens, or you will share the captain’s fate.

Those of you living on the outer rim of the cosmos might be unfamiliar with the original board game, which is like the last 10 minutes of your favorite sci-fi TV show… except that things have gone disastrously wrong, and (spoiler alert) the captain is dead.

Step into the Captain's chair and command the crew! Each team member has a very particular set of skills that you'll need to leverage to the full if you want to survive. From the Chief Engineer, Weapons Officer, and visiting Admiral, all the way down to the Ensign and the ship’s Janitor, you must combine your unique talents to avoid utter annihilation in the cold depths of space!

Created in collaboration with table-top maestros, AEG and The Game Crafter, the videogame delivers all the fun of the original, cardboard experience. Players take charge of the ship’s stalwart crew, as they battle an unrelenting alien nemesis, intent on eating what little brains they have, and destroying their beloved ship. You’ll need to keep a cool head and utilise each crew member’s particular set of skills to repel boarders, keep the ship operational, and survive long enough to fix the Jump Core so you can escape to safety!

Players can expect all the tightly balanced, nail-biting strategy of the boxed game, with the immersion and flow of a fully realized virtual world. The original game’s totally unique aesthetic has been painstakingly recreated in full 3D, and you’ll feel as if you’ve been teleported right on to the board.

A few eagle-eared viewers have already recognized the dulcet tones of the trailer’s voice-over as belonging to none other than Mr. Kevan Brighting, an actor much-loved in gaming circles for his spine-tingling work as the mysterious narrator from amazing, indie weird-em-up, The Stanley Parable.

Thunderbox have confirmed that Kevan will indeed be lending his mellifluous vocals to The Captain is Dead in the role of a brand-new character, created exclusively for the digital edition of the game. Details on this new character remain sparse… all we know is that he’s best described as a cross between your least favorite uncle, Ming the Merciless, and Q from Star Trek The Next Generation.  It's OK though: he’s one of the good guys…

…or is he?

The only way to find out for sure is to head on over to Steam and download the free demo!

Key Features:

  • Teleporter Chief - Can beam around the ship at no cost.
  • Cyborg - Immune to the mysterious forces of deep space.
  • Crewman - Gets killed very easily... good thing there is an infinite supply!
  • Counselor - Can manipulate skills for the best chance of success.
  • Ensign - A fast learner, and even faster runner.
  • Soldier - An expert in kicking alien ass.

The Captain is Dead will be beaming down to your PC (Steam) on July 1, 2020.
