'Martha is Dead' Gives Us A Look Behind Its Development Process - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on Dec. 17, 2021 @ 2:19 p.m. PST

Martha Is Dead is a dark psychological thriller with rich narrative, lore and real-world locations.

Martha is Dead continues LKA’s signature style of deep multi-layered narratives combined with real locations and a mix of history, superstition and psychological distress. LKAs expertise for delving into complex and riveting subject matter that borrows from both fact and fiction helps to distinguish its development pedigree and passion.

Set in Tuscany, 1944, south of the Gothic line, as conflict intensifies between German and Allied forces, the desecrated body of a woman is found drowned. Her twin sister, the young daughter of a German soldier must deal with the acute trauma of loss, while the truth of the brutal murder is shrouded by mysterious folklore and the extreme horror of war draws ever closer.

With photo-realism at its core and using advanced texturing techniques alongside full support for real-time ray tracing, Martha is Dead is built in Unreal Engine 4 and is set once again to blur the boundary between gaming and reality by bringing human stories to life; amplified with high-level production, cinematic visuals and haunting audio.

Fans of first-person thrillers will experience a unique opportunity through Martha is Dead, as the game offers a chilling story seen through the eyes of an innocent young woman who is on a mission to find out the truth. Along the way, she will encounter situations and discover things no one should have to… mortal death was the easy path compared to this one marred by mental and emotional distress which lingers on.

Developer LKA shared an in-depth featurette by Studio head and Martha Is Dead Creative Director, Luca Dalcò.

This exclusive feature has Luca share his thoughts on everything from building on his last project, The Town of Light, to how his team have pushed boundaries to deliver a level of immersion like never before.

The new screenshots that further highlight the photo-realistic graphics the close-knit Italian team have been able to create, thanks in part to the power of Unreal Engine.

“From the first concepts, we knew we wanted to push boundaries and deliver an immersion through detail and realism. It’s not easy, there are often comprises to make in scenes, but I’m so proud of what my team have been able to deliver”. Said Luca Dalcò, Founder of LKA and Creative Director on Martha Is Dead, “The term powered by Unreal engine, is more than just a marketing saying – the innovation the team at Unreal help developers unlock is unimageable, as seen through the recent Matrix tech demo. They also give us the chance to push further on game quality giving us economical support on development. We’ve utilized features but also have managed to place LKA at the cutting edge of new tools, being early adopters of the MetaHuman technology, which we’re excited to continue to reveal more on.”

Built in Unreal Engine 4, Martha Is Dead combines real-world locations, working in links to historical events during the latter stages of World War II, superstition, folklore, and deep psychological distress. The game opens in the depths of the Italian countryside as Allied and Axis forces turn the nation into a pincered playground.

A physical version of Martha Is Dead is now available to pre-order on PS4 and PS5. Celebrate LKA’s release with an exclusive reversible sleeve, fold out double-sided A3 poster, collectable sticker sheet and a digital download Tarot card pack; based on the cards in-game.

Wired Productions also today unveiled the limited edition Martha Is Dead triple Vinyl Soundtrack, you can register your interest here - more details will be shared on this in the near future.

Martha is Dead is coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC on February 24, 2022.
