'Minecraft' Trails & Tales Content Update Gets June Release Date - Screens

by Rainier on May 26, 2023 @ 11:15 a.m. PDT

Minecraft is a sandbox building game which allows players to build, construct and craft objects in a cubic world.

Minecraft is a game based on limitless creativity and building in a three dimensional sandbox world.

Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles. Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs.

Are your signs sick of standing up and ready to hang around? Is your BFF on their way to join you on your camel? Maybe you’ve thrown out all your boats because you are exclusively a raft-crafter now.

Good news, dear reader, the wait is almost over because the Trails & Tales Update will be coming to a device near you on June 7!

Here are the major features:

  • ARCHEOLOGY: Archeology adds an increased history to worlds—allowing for more storytelling possibilities. Players will discover suspicious sand in new desert temple rooms and the newly introduced suspicious gravel in ocean ruins or trail ruins, a new structure found in cold biomes. Players can carefully uncover hidden tools, bones, sniffer eggs, and pottery sherds. Craft four of these sherds together to make a pot with patterns telling a unique story.
  • SNIFFER: The winner of the 2022 Minecraft Live mob vote has been brought back from extinction! Players will find the sniffer eggs in archeology sites. A baby snifflet will hatch from these eggs and grow into the huge sniffer, one of the largest friendly mobs ever in Minecraft! The sniffer will “sniff” out ancient seeds you can grow into the new torchflower and pitcher plant.
  • CAMELS: Another huge mob with a mind of its own, players can saddle it and raise it – but when a camel without a rider wants to sit, it sits. With its tall legs, the camel keeps players out of reach of zombies on the ground allowing you to sprint or dash to safety. Just be careful of skeletons’ ranged attacks! The camel can hold two riders, making it the perfect mob to go on an adventure with a friend.
  • CHERRY GROVES: These beautiful new trees fill the horizon with a stunning shade of pink. These new trees can be crafted into a full pink wood-set, including the newly introduced hanging signs, and cherry tree saplings to grow more of the lovely pink trees. Players will also be delighted to find a unique petal falling particle effect only in the cherry groves, as well as a new pink petals ground cover decoration.
  • ARMOR TRIMS: Using the new smithing templates found across biomes and structures, players can express themselves through their armor by combining different materials and smithing template patterns for a wide variety of customization options. In total, there are 16 armor trims, including new trims found in ancient cities and trail ruins, and numerous unique combinations.
  • BAMBOO WOOD, CHISELED BOOKSHELVES & MORE: Bamboo can now be crafted into a full set of bamboo wood blocks—including signs and fences! Bamboo rafts function as boats but have a unique look. Players can now add Piglin heads to their worlds, dropped when a Piglin is killed by a charged creeper. Chiseled bookshelves take Minecraft storytelling to the next level, allowing players to record the stories and lore of their world in their own custom bookshelves—alongside their most valuable enchanted books. Hanging signs add new ways to decorate. That’s not all – signs can now have writing on both sides and be edited without destroying them (waxing the signs with honeycomb prevents them from being edited).

You may notice some of the major features have received small tweaks and improvements based off feedback from the community. We’re also excited to share we’ve also made some quality of life changes to features in recent snapshots and previews, including:

  • Calibrated Sculk Sensors: Opening up a plethora of possibilities for redstoners, this new variant of Sculk Sensors which allows you to filter vibrations based on their frequency level. They are not found naturally and can only be crafted.
  • Vibration Resonance: Blocks of Amethyst have a new behavior when placed adjacent to Sculk Sensors. If that Sculk Sensor receives a vibration, the Block of Amethyst will re-emit its frequency as a separate vibration at its location.

The Trails & Tales Update brings you a new biome, more mobs and blocks, and a veritable library of ways to shape your Minecraft story. Whether or not you prefer an epic adventure or a detailed musing, the features of Minecraft 1.20 can be used to tell a tale of any size, shape – or grain! You can now craft and build with two new full wood sets – bamboo and cherry! Bamboo wood sets include a raft, that you can craft with or without a chest. The cherry grove is a biome that is as rare as it is pink and pretty.

Take a trip on a mob made for two by mounting the camel! It’s also perfectly fine to ride off on your own. The camel’s long legs will take you wherever you want to go. The monumental size of this mob is not only majestic, but also very practical as melee mobs will not reach you! The ear wiggle is not as practical, but it is incredibly adorable – which is also very important.

UNVEIL MINECRAFT’S PAST

The second mob joining Minecraft in 1.20 is one that the community voted for during Minecraft Live 2022. Also of the larger variety, the sniffer is a gentle giant that was once extinct. You can bring it back to the Overworld by finding its eggs, hatching them, and watching your snifflet grow up. I would recommend an endless cycle of hatching, so you can always look at the adorable snifflet discovering the world while the grown sniffer sniffs out seeds for ancient plants: the torchflower plant and pitcher plant! You really can have it all, and by all, I mean all the sniffers!

So where does one find sniffer eggs? I am so glad you asked, because that is the perfect segue into another new feature – archeology! Dig around in the sand to find buried ruins and use the new brush tool to uncover the treasures in suspicious sand and suspicious gravel blocks. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a useful tool, sniffer egg, or pottery sherd (not a typo!) Keep searching, because if you find four of them you can put them together to make a pot. There are lots of different patterns to unearth, each telling their own story.

STRIKE A POSE

Speaking of stories, this update allows you to share them through the power of fashion! Yes, that’s right, wearable storytelling is coming not just in the form of shield banner parity, but through armor trims! You need to hunt down one of the numerous armor trims that can be found across the different dimensions of Minecraft. Then you can dye it in one of ten colors and add it to your armor on a smithing table, and voila! Everyone you encounter will bask in the spoils of your victories.

THE LIBRARY IS OPEN – AND EVERYWHERE

Did you know that you can hang signs now? Standing is so 1.19! Leave notes for your friends or mislead your foes by hanging signs on the sides of structures or beneath a block. And while we’re feeling mischievous, why not add some playable mob sounds? Place a mob head, including the new piglin mob head, on a note block to play that mob’s ambient sound! Add the ambiance of the End without the danger by creating an Ender Dragon white noise machine, or scare off intruders and in-laws with a hissSssSssing fence. Just be careful if you hook up your new mob head noteblocks to skulk sensors, because the new, calibrated skulk sensors coming with 1.20 are even more sensitive (and the redstone possibilities even more exciting!).

When you’ve traversed the Overworld, leapt through dimensions, or woken up from a prolonged meditation, why not write it all down in a book? A book which you can then keep safe in the new chiseled bookshelf. Store it along with other books, a book and quill, and enchanted books. You can even add some redstone if you want to add some movement to your library. But remember, indoor voices only if you’re visiting my personal library. It’s also where I nap, which I am going to do until June 7 so I can pass the time quicker!

The Trails & Tales Update will be available to download for free starting on June 7  for Minecraft: Java Edition on Windows, macOS, and Linux; and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, Windows, and a brand new device: Chromebook!
