Activision revealed that two new Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock track packs are set to storm living rooms. Available today on XBLA/PSN is the Modern Metal pack, which includes Deftones' Hole in the Earth, Avenged Sevenfold's Almost Easy and Thrice's The Arsonist. On St. Patrick's Day, three songs from Celtic punk band Dropkick Murphys will become available for free.

Sony has
rolled out new PlayStation Store content, starting with three NIN tracks (March of the Pigs, The Collector, and The Perfect Drug) for Rock Band ($1.99/5.49 track/pack) and fixes for a few previously released tracks. Guitar Hero III fans can download the No Doubt Track Pack ($6.25), and apart from that only a PAIN: Scurv Dogg Character ($0.99) and game/movie trailers.

Apart from the new tracks revealed earlier today, a new Guitar Hero III update has been rolled out, which is available worldwide on the X360 and for North American PS3s (the European and Australian update has been submitted to Sony, but not approved yet). The update enables the Hyperspeed cheat in online games, adds the Co-Op Quickplay mode on PS3, calibration improvements, various stability improvements and fixes.

Activision has issued a statement regarding the mono restricted audio issue recently discovered in the Guitar Hero III Wii edition, "We are currently working with Nintendo and are planning to issue an improved audio experience in future versions of the game. We expect to have re-mastered discs available by early 2008 and we will be offering consumers replacement discs at no cost."

Activision, RedOctane and developer Harmonix are getting
sued by rock band The Romantics over the inclusion of its hit single "What I Like About You," by cover band Wavegroup Sound, in Guitar Hero II Rocks The 80s. Reason? The Romantics claim that the performance is "virtually indistinguishable from the authentic version" and might confuse consumers as to whether the recording is an original piece.

Activision's latest financial numbers show a net revenue increase of 69% from last year's $188.2 million to $317.7M. Net income jumped from a $42.6M loss to a $28.5M gain. In the conference call, Activision executives said that while it's only been in stores for a week, GH III is the best launch title in company history, selling $100M in North America alone. Looking ahead, Activision is planning new titles in the Call of Duty, Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero franchises and has plans for new titles in cooperation with Dreamworks (Monsters Vs. Aliens, Madagascar II, Kung Fu Panda,) two unannounced superhero titles and, to top it all off, its first James Bond-licensed title.
