For the fiscal Q1 2009, THQ’s net sales climbed 77% (from $137.6 million to $243.5 million compared to 2008) primarily by UFC 2009 Undisputed (2.9 million units sold), and Red Faction: Guerrilla (1 million units sold). In the follow up conference call CEO Brian Farrell revealed that THQ will be bringing the UFC franchise to Wii and handhelds, but gave no further details.

Deep Silver Goes Handheld

German publisher Deep Silver announced it is expanding into the handheld business and its first titles will be a port from Secret Files Tunguska to NDS. Stormregion, known for Panzers and Rush for Berlin, is also working on a yet to be announced PSP title, to be joined by Square Enix's NDS remake of Final Fantasy III, and D3P's Cube and Practical IQ for PSP.

Since E3 2005 very little has been heard from Will Wright's Spore, a new sim/strategy game which will allow the player to control all aspects of life, from a cellular level al the way out of this galaxy. While the initial revealing only indicated Spore would be coming to PC, a recent job list on GameDev.net indicates EA's plans to bring the title to yet undefined handheld platforms, "the Spore team is looking for an experienced designer that will be responsible for designing, creating, and maintaining game systems and content for SPORE Handheld titles."

Nintendo UK has today announced that 1 million units of its Nintendo DS handheld console are in the hands of gamers across the country. Many stores across the UK are continuing to report they are sold out of Nintendo DS until new stock arrives in the coming week.
Sony Announces Their New Handheld 'PSP'

Enhancing its strong platform strategies, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc (SCEI) announced today plans to expand its in-home entertainment to outside the home with a new, all-in-one portable entertainment platform, "PSPTM."
Scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2004, the company's goal is to extend the reach of PlayStation to a broader audience, allowing consumers to enjoy gaming and other entertainment content anytime, anywhere. Specific details on release plans and pricing will be disclosed at a later date.

U.S. Video Game Sales Up By 21% Due To Handhelds

A study revealed today that retail sales of U.S. video games hardware, software and accessories jumped up by 21 percent in the first six months of the year, as the popularity of handheld devices offset a decline in aging game consoles.
'The Sims 2' Coming to Consoles and Handhelds

Not really much of a surprise, but in a recent interview with IGN, Maxis producer Scot Amos revealed that they have been working on porting The Sims 2 to consoles and handheld systems. The base of the game will be content that people liked in The Sims 2, but also material taken from the University expansion pack. But people who are familiar with the PC edition, still might want to check the console editions, since it will also have new & exclusive content, new locations, new characters and so forth. The PS2 edition will support HDD and Eye Toy (you can import yourself into the game as a character), the Xbox version will HDTV and 720dpi, while the Gamecube will have custom content.
