The game itself is set within the world presented in the Grandia series, in the "Age of Genesis", before the original Grandia story takes place.

"Heroes" actor Masi Oka, known as Hiro on the TV series, is working on a new MMORPG called The Defenders, according to the Hollywood Reporter, which also reveals that Dreamworks has signed on to make the IP into a new feature film. The Defenders centers on a group of teenagers playing in a multiplayer video game, forced to come together for a real adventure and becoming inadvertent heroes in the process. The movie will be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. D.J. Caruso, known for The Goonies and Transformers, is in talks to direct the flick.
