At a
briefing in London Disney's CFO Tom Staggs told journalists that Disney is "ramping up our investment in video games," and plans to triple the amount of money it spends developing video games. Last year's budget reached $100 million, this year $130 million is set aside, and in the next 5 years Staggs said Disney wants to invest $350 million per year in video games, principally consoles and handhelds. Market researcher forecasts the gaming software market will be worth $21.3 billion in 2009.

Disney announced that henceforth Buena Vista Games will be known as Disney Interactive Studios reflecting a change in creativity, the weight of Disney content in their portfolio, and the enormous value consumers see in the Disney brand. DIS will publish both Disney and non-Disney branded video games for all platforms worldwide under the company's consumer brands including Disney, ABC and Touchstone.

Shanda Interactive Entertainment Ltd. announced that it has signed an agreement with Walt Disney Co.'s Internet group to develop and distribute an online game based on popular Disney characters, marking Disney's entrance into China's online game market. Shanda said the game will be developed for a broader demographic than traditional online games, as well as China's growing segment of female online gamers.
