In a somewhat surprising move, it seems long time MMO creator
Matt Firor has left the company he co-founded many years ago. Known for Dark Age of Camelot, Mythic was recently bought by Electronic Arts, renamed to EA Mythic, and is currently working on Warhammer Online. While there is no official statement just yet, it is widely believed Matt left to start a new developing company closer to home and shorten his commute time.

In 2004, the EU ordered Microsoft to share program code with rivals as part of a ruling in its antitrust lawsuit. Now the EU believes Microsoft did not fully comply and
imposed a $357 million fine, and threatened new penalties of $3.82 million a day beginning July 31. Microsoft of course immediately said it would appeal the fine in court, saying the unprecedented fine is not justified. EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes says after two years, she feels Microsoft has still not put an end to its illegal conduct, justifying the penalty payments.

SteamPowered website has been updated with details on a new Half-Life 2: Deathmatch patch adding a player "ready" command, objects no longer hide tripwire slams, it explodes, and scores no longer get updated after the round is over, fixing the case where a player is standing next to a grenade or flaming barrel when the round ends. Just restart Steam for the effects to take place.

The latest Famitsu issue gives the first details on Monster Hunter Portable 2, sequel to what is known in North America as MH Freedom. Borrowing various elements from Monster Hunter 2 on the PS2, the handheld sequel will feature ad hoc and online multiplayer, as well as new weapons and new locations such as snow covered landscapes. No release date was mentioned but surely more information will be released at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show.

Nikkei Net Interactive, Ricoh has developed a diffraction plate to be placed between the reader's laser and lens, allowing it to change the beam's spot size according to the media, either being CD, DVD, HD DVD or Blu-ray. A Ricoh spokesperson commented, "It will make it possible to build players and recorders ready for all formats, which will benefit consumers." Ricoh Technologies will unveil its new optical device this week at the International Optoelectronics Exhibition '06 in Japan.
