Nintendo Japan announced today it will launch a high-end version of its Nintendo DS portable game machine on March 2 in Japan, which will be thinner and lighter than the existing model. The Nintendo DS Lite will be sold for 16,800 yen ($145) versus 15,000 yen for the existing model, and weighs 218 grams compared to 275 grams for the Nintendo DS.

A couple weeks ago Nintendo revealed that it sold 5 million NDS' in Japan, and now with the holiday season behind us, the total worldwide tally eyes even more impressive. Combined sell-thru numbers in Japan, North America, Latin America, Australia and other territories, 13 million Nintendo DS are now in the hands of people.
At its media briefing at the E3 Media & Business Summit, Nintendo announced multiple new games (Wii fit) and accessories (balance board, Wii Zapper) designed to reinforce that bridge and further demonstrate everyone is a gamer.
"Games like Wii Sports and the original Brain Age proved anyone can pick up a video game system and immediately have fun," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We're building on that foundation with games and accessories appealing to our current fan base and drawing in even more new players."

Nintendo announced today that, so far, it has sold over 2 million Nintendo DS' since it launched earlier this year, selling at a rate of 100,000 units per week. Nintendogs contributes to its hand-held popularity, which has sold over 1 million copies since its European launch on October 7th in Europe.
