At the
AOU 2008 (Feb. 16) SNK Playmore JP and Taito will unveil the latest installment in its classic arcade title King of Fighters XII, and show it off for the first time, even though only in video format. In development for quite a while now, KOF XII is a fresh start with a brand new engine and overhauled sprites. Scheduled for release on Taito's Type X² arcade machine mid 2008, KOF XII is expected to be ported on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2009.

KOF Neowave features 12 three-man teams made up of some of the greatest characters from SNK's 11-year history, including the Women Fighters Team and the Fatal Fury Team. Neowave features three modes of play - Super Cancel, Guard Break, and Max2. A new "Heat Mode" lets players power up their attacks in exchange for a gradual loss of health.

Let’s clear one small thing up here, all right? This isn’t really SNK’s first foray into the realm of 3D. Before this, they had the Samurai Shodown games on NeoGeo CD, 64 and Warrior’s Rage, neither of which are worth the considerable effort they take to find; and Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition, an excellent game on extremely rare hardware, which is unfortunately better known for a terrifically botched PSOne port.

The King of Fighters is a long, long running series. This fighting game series has been running at the speed of Madden for a major length of time, until it stopped annual releases in 2003 and went to subseries like Neowave and Maximum Impact. Now we're back to the original series, with the Roman numerals translating to 12, with a nice set of HD updates that bring the series into the current generation.
