The 'Home' 3D online user community service will enable users to create their own avatar and explore a real-time virtual community, as if they are playing a detailed 3D game. Yesterday The Times Online stated that Home would launch this month, which has now been confirmed by director of PlayStation Home director Jack Buser. A specific date was not mentioned, but all signs indicate that the previously mentioned Dec. 17, 2008 date might be the one.

High Energy Productions' producer Keisuke Kikuchi announced Rygar: The Battle of Argus will be an all-new Wii exclusive title, not a PS2 port. Expected later this year in Japan, Rygar: The Battle of Argus will introduce a new hero and use the Wiimote to control Rygar's trademark weapon, the Diskarmor. Originally scheduled for Dec. 2008, Tecmo has pushed back Rygar until Feb. 3, 2009.

Mafia II, developed by the original creators Illusion Softworks, features a deep mobster-driven narrative packed with both behind-the-wheel and on-foot action.
Over the weekend we revealed details on The Illusion engine, claiming that Mafia II would only support DX10/Vista, which turned out to be incorrect. 2k Czech confirmed the game will be compatible with WinXP/DirectX 9.0c.

Atari has been on the warpath the past few months, after facing delisting from NASDAQ multiple times, it has signed a slew of high-profile titles such as
Riddick,
Ghostbusters and various others. Atari has now also acquired US-based MMO developer Cryptic Studios, known for NCSoft's City of Heroes/City of Villains. Cryptic Studios, who recently recruited
Flagship Studios' Bill Roper, is currently working on three titles: Champions Online (2009), Star Trek Online (2010) and an unannounced title.

With its shares dropping 70% in the past year, Sony Corp. announced that it will lay off about 4% of its 186,000-strong workforce (8,000 employees), an additional 8,000 contract employees, cut back on investments by 30%, close several of its overseas manufacturing plants, and pull out of businesses as it is looking to cut $1.1 billion in costs by March 2010. It was not clear whether the games division will be affected, but judging by the large amount of cutbacks, it's hard to imagine that it would not be involved.
