SCEI announced today that cumulative worldwide shipment of PS2s had reached 100 million units, within 5 years and 9 months since its launch in Japan in March 2000. Sony is recalling 3.5 million faulty power adapters for its PlayStation 2 because they may overheat and cause injury. The adapters were made between August and December of 2004 for the slimline PS2, which has a free-standing power adapter to save space. PS2 owners can go to

Japanese magazine Nikkei Electronics quotes an interview with SCE head honcho Ken Kutaragi that its next-gen PS3 console will no longer feature the previously announced three Gigabit Ethernet ports, allowing it to act as a home network router. The reason cited was that it would have made the console too expensive. Instead, people will have to resort to their own in-house routers to accommodate networking.

American Technology Research analyst P.J. McNealy said the Xbox was likely to overtake the PS2 on a units-sold basis for the first time ever in the United States in April. He estimated Xbox sales of 275,000 units this month, versus about 200,000 units for the PS2. PS2 sales have been falling in the United States this year, and in the just-ended fiscal year Sony said PS2 unit shipments fell 37 percent in North America. Unless Sony cuts the price on its PS2 in order to spur sales, U.S. game software makers, many of whom track Sony's fiscal year, may find sales growth targets harder to reach, analysts said.
