Early U.S. sales of the new NDSi are ahead of those for NDS Lite, according to Nintendo's internal tracking numbers. In its first week, NDSi sold 435,000 in the United States, while the NDS Lite had sold 226,300 systems after the same amount of time on the U.S. market after its launch.

During his GDC 09 keynote, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed that the Wii has now sold over 50 million units, making it the fastest-selling game console in history. Earlier today Square Enix announced
a few new titles, but Nintendo itself is working on Rock N' Roll Climber, a rock climbing simulator using the balance board and nunchuk, and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for the DSi later this year. Classic arcade games are coming to the Wii Shop Channel ($5/6) while a new Wii System Update will allow users to expand storage with an SD Card from which to load games.

While the Wii has most of its success because of the motion controlled Wiimote, the Wii also comes with a classic controller for the retro fans. Nintendo updated
its Wii website revealing the Classic Controller PRO, which will sport additional shoulder buttons and hand grips compared to the old version, but will still require the good old wire to connect to the Wii. No price was revealed and so far it is only scheduled for release in Japan, somewhere this summer.

According to the NPD Group's December sales numbers, the industry grew 9%, making for an overall 19% growth in 2008 (amounting to $21.3 billion). Not surprisingly 2008's big winners are Nintendo's Wii (10.2 million units) and NDS (9.9 mill. units), followed by Microsoft's X360 (4.7 mill. units) and Sony's PS3 (3.6 mill. units). Software-wise, Wii Play took the crown with over 5 million copies sold in 2008, followed by Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, all selling more than 4 million copies. GTA IV (X360, 4.2 mill. copies), Call of Duty: World at War (X360, 2.7 mill. copies) and Gears of War 2 (X360, 2.3 mill. units) are next, with the only PS3 title in the top 10 being GTA IV with 1.8 mill. copies sold.
