Acquired by Eidos in 2007, in order to boost its casual mobile gaming market share, Rockpool Games employees have been made redundant and the Manchester development studio has been shut down according to Bill Harbison, a former employee. Eidos has now confirmed the closure blaming the "incredibly challenging and competitive times" so it can keep its costs under control. Earlier this year Eidos had already laid off a number of Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider) employees, and last year shut down Pivotal.

Late last year, Microsoft revealed that in light of the weakened economy it would be laying off up to 17% of its workforce (15,000 employees), and now that the numbers are in (2% increase in revenue, but an 11% decrease in net income) the Redmond powerhouse announced that in order to reduce the company’s annual operating expense run rate by approximately $1.5 billion it will be laying off 5,000 jobs in R&D, marketing, sales, finance, legal, HR, and IT over the next 18 months.
